Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

@adambagley yes they will pay for your off campus expenses. Rent, utilities. And not sure why summer.

@Azscholar17 Great! thanks, so how are the total off campus expenses calculated?

Well they calculate how much your rent is for nine months plus utilities.

@Azscholar17 so you can pick any apartment in the city? i mean rent in NY isn’t exactly cheap, and the other three months your expected to pay out of pocket?

@Adam basically, but it can’t be thee most expensive place. It has to fit in your budget of the university. And the last three months is basically on your own, cause Gates only pays for the school term.

@Azscholar17, thanks! you’re alot of help, so during winter break your rent is taken care of , and in the summer you are expected to work thats the idea? Everything is through the financial aid office or is it some other way?

So if someone is selected as a gates scholar, is it mandatory to attend a fall conference? I heard theres a west coast and east coast conference and all expenses are paid for to attend it. Can a past scholar explain how it all goes? how long and what do the cholars do there?

It is mandatory to attend to the most of my knowledge. I do not want to reveal too much about the conference but it is a great opportunity to network with your peers at other institutions and discover ways to ensure academic success at your institution. The food is also great.

It’s highly recommended you go, but if you are not able to go, you let them know, and scholars are there for the weekend. It’s a nice break from school, and yes all expenses paid.

Do you guys know about the committee that reviews the finalists applications? What do they focus on? I dont have a 4.0 but my junior and senior year classes were all taken at the university, would that even out the fact that i have a few B’s on my transcript?

I was wondering the same thing. I wonder if we’re already like on a rubric and now it’s just a matter of validating our data. Once the data is validated the top so many go through. I can’t imagine them re-evaluating the essays again.

I am now, like many other finalist, waiting until April 15 for the GMS scholar announcement. IS there anything we need to do except for the 5 documents that need to be send? Additionally, I marked NYU as my college choice in the GMS application, but I will hear back from NYU on April 1. I do not want to wait that long before I send in all my college acceptance letters, should I just send in theones that I am accepted for right now? What else do they look into a finalist? Any advice/information would be highly appreciated. Thanks

@adambagley I know most of the committee for my division. I’m sure you are more qualified then I was with that GPA. Good Luck ! :)

@zesty No there is nothing you can do after the five documents are sent, besides finishing high school strong! Send a college admission letter from your second choice if your first choice has not yet notified you. After you are a scholar, they ask for your final college choice. Good Luck! :)

interesting - if you have the time to review:

@Azscholar17 So you mean GPA isn’t a big deal but the rigor of the courses you took is, correct?

What happens if you qualify as a Gates scholar but your intended college gives you a full ride based on your financial need plus federal grant and work study. Do they cancel each other out?

You would keep Gates regardless of the financial aid package from your institution

When I first applied for the Gates Scholarship I had a low GPA(3.3)/ I applied anyways. And now that I am chosen as a finalist…it is time to send in the GPA Verification Sheet, Transcript. I am really scared if they will really judge me on the GPA for the scholar list. I am really nervous because I barely squeezed myself into the requirement of the scholarship. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

I received a notice from Gates today stating “Warning- Incomplete Candidate File.” Does this mean I am out of the running, or are they sending a courtesy warning telling me to finish uploading my files? Really scared now. :(
