Gates Millenium Scholarship Official Thread 2013

Also - do I have to remain Pell Grant eligible each year to continue the scholarship? In regard to the financial / income side, are their any other factors / limits for future years?

Southern, yes anything that is not tuition/fees/books is taxable. Whatever your room and board are is taxable, and trust me, it can add up to more than $1000/per year.

Gates never required me to prove that we were pell grant eligible each year.

I don’t know if I told you guys, but I’m a Gates winner!! All the hard work and effort paid off! Thank You God! This is truly a blessing

Southern5062 – Thank you so much for your kind words - it means a lot to both me and my son. Congratulations to all the new scholars. All the best…

@southern no you do not have to be pell eligible for returning scholars. All you have to do is fill out the FASFA each year. : )

@southern. Yes they did send me a tax form for this year. Showing a total of what Gates funded me.

Learned that I’m a GMSP Scholar yesterday. =) Does anyone know if having a ~$4000 EFC can have your scholarship revoked? This is because my parents are divorced and my college of choice required my noncustodial parent’s financial information. Thanks!

Sadly, I received my rejection letter yesterday. However the letter states it came from UNCF in Washington, but I am Hispanic and should have received news from HSF. Does this mean there could have been an error in processing my app?

@gmark No unfortunately it’s not an error. UNCF is the head of the divisions.

I have a question.

I am a Gates Scholar and I also have a full scholarship to Loyola University Chicago where I will be attending school. The scholarship from Loyola will cover pretty much everything but books. Will Gates cover that or will I have to since my EFC is 1477? Also, does Gates cover insurance?

To iishninjarawr - Gates does not cover insurance.

Regarding what you will pay each year (Gates vs. Loyola scholarship)…With Gates, If your EFC is 1477, that is to be paid by you, not Gates. Gates kicks in after the EFC. So if all you have to buy is books each year at Loyola ($1000 est.), or with Gates you have to pay $1477 / year… It seems that you have a blessing with Loyola. It makes one ask if the Gates could go to someone that didn’t have a full scholarship like that. But there are probably a number of those out there just like you- and it certainly isn’t your fault that you won two great scholarships…it’s awesome, really!!! - but at the end of the day, I think we all wish there were money there for everyone. I think those of us that won feel so grateful, and as for me, my heart breaks for those that came so close but didn’t make it. For some, that means no college.

i agree southern5062. thats why i ask if i should stop applying to scholarships and withdraw from current pending ones so othes get a chance.

Can any current scholars weigh in on this?

does gates cover all financial needs in colleges that choalrships would as well?

@ iishninjawawer at ucla, i also got a grant for insurence so thats nice

Sciman - I think you have to look closely at the each scholarship, but I think it is worth taking time “now” to look at each one. I found one I applied to where the award is a $1000 check to use towards education or things you need to prepare for college. Since I need a new laptop etc… I will stay in the running for that one.

After talking about it this weekend, and praying about it, I have decided to withdraw from those other few that are pending. I checked them fairly carefully and couldn’t find anything major they would cover that Gates would not. Also, I don’t feel right about taking a $5000 scholarship from some group, just because it covers a random fee that would cost me $300 - $400 (just an example). It may be the only one that someone else even gets. For me (and I know it’s a personal choice…) think it goes back to the golden rule…do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I have to just believe that if I do the right thing, I will figure out a better way to cover that random / small fee.

Now - having said that…I, too, would love to hear some feedback esp. from someone that has won Gates in the past, that can tell us of any fees / costs they were surprised that Gates did not cover, or anything that other scholarships cover that Gates does not.

just a curious thought, i wonder when the website will be updated with gates scholars class of 2013?

this might be a stupid question, but I’m confused about work study. What exactly is it and how do you qualify?

@touchstone: i dont have a facebook but b/c gates seropiusluy planning on getting one now. can someone help me ask my questions for me? PLEASE?

it is simple and free to establish a Facebook account. You should definitely do so, as the Gates Scholars group will be an important resource for you as a scholar.

My school has 3 gms scholars. Also, UPenn gave me a EFC of 1,250. However, my EFC according to FASFA is 0. Will gates pay the 1,250?

Kind of late but I forgot to post on here because of the excitement and my physics projects:

I am an Asian scholar from Iowa! (As of 4/18/13)
