I have a question similar to Duncan’s. My FAFSA EFC is 2130 this year, but my EFC based on my financial aid package for Dartmouth is $6,300. Does Gates cover the difference? I can handle 2130 a year in loans, but would rather avoid 6300 :/

Duncan1 and tipa891:

I believe that Gates won’t cover the individual college’s determined EFC. I’m in the same situation with ~$4,500 per year. :(

Well, I guess I will continue to apply for other outside scholarships.

@ Duncan1: I spoke to my son’s institution today and they informed me that any other scholarships he gets will only reduce the grants that he is receiving from the University, but the bottom line “free money” remains the same. I would visit directly with your University financial aid department to get some advice.

For graduate school funding from gates, I understand that public health is acceptable. Would GMS support/fund a degree as a nurse practicioner?

GATES DID THEIR PRESS RELEASE!!! SCHOLARS BY STATE!
http://www.gmsp.org/Img/UserDir/docs/Class%20of%202013%20Gates%20Millennium%20Scholars%20by%20home%20state.pdf

I’m so confused…don’t you have to be a minority for the gates scholarship? A girl from my school is 100% white but got this…

Hey,
I just wanted to get the thread started for 2014 GMS. I hope to get guidance from my fellow peers and give some as well. Want to wish everyone luck.

I think it would be better to start our own thread they already have soooo many pages

Gates Scholars, make sure you check your financial aid award and Gates award and compare carefully to make sure you get the money you deserve. My daughter is attending Notre Dame. And Gates sent the correct amount of money for the semester to the school, but the school mistakenly only applied half of that amount for the semester, mistakenly thinking it was supposed to be for the entire year. Also they were trying to reduce her other financial aid, claiming that she couldn’t receive more than the cost of her tuition bill, not realizing that Gates pays for books, travel & expenses. I had to fight tooth and nail and e-mail and call and finally have an in-person meeting with a financial aid officer at the school to finally get the money she was entitled to. They were trying to short her over $4,000 per year. Make sure you do the math for yourself. Don’t assume that your school is calculating things correctly.

Do Gates Millennium Scholarship is only available for US permanent resident?

@newhavenctmom I didn’t do QB because i thought it had too much cons as compared to pros. It seemed a bit shady that it was playing the third-party, but I guess thats just me. I haven’t even started my essays yet. I’m a bit nervous!

ANY GMS SCHOLAR OFF CAMPUS?
How does GMS fund for off campus housing? And can someone go off campus for their second semester? I’ve been looking for this info everywhere and cannot find it.

@VMarshall Nope. As long as you are a legal permanent resident. I’m a GMS scholar and I bear legal documents.

@iSuccess

I’m a senior currently living off campus with GMS funding it. Basically, you go to the Financial Aid office of your undergraduate institution and tell them you would like to live off campus and have the Gates scholarship. At my school, they said that they had a set estimate of what it should cost to live off campus in the area (I’ve heard other schools simply ask you to report what your specific off campus living arrangement would cost, but I guess it just differs from school to school). When GMS needed my financial aid award letter, the financial aid office factored in the amount needed to live off campus. I ended up receiving a stipend of $7942 to cover my expenses for each semester.

As for a second semester, thing, I’m not entirely sure. A lot of the work through off campus funding is done through your Financial Aid office and not GMS. GMS will simply give you the money that the Financial Aid office reports that you need. I would start there and see what they can do. Hope I was able to help! Best of luck!

Can you give a brief run-down of what Gates has communicated to you and what you are required?

For example (and it does not have to be exact)…turned in the application all complete January, heard from Gates (this month)…what happens next? I also know that you attend something in the month of September/October? Is that only once or every year?

I’d like to hear your experience!

@jacquelynr

Thank You So much. The only thing I’m worried about is the cost limit. If I don’t live on campus than that is about a $8,500 dollar difference than on campus. What would you say is a reasonable budget or monthly rent amount that GMS would fund for the nine months?

Isucess, Gates will give you whagever your school determines is of campus room and board charges, this will vary from school to school. Contact your FA office, usually they will have a specific person that deals with Gates Scholars, so ask for them.

Just looked at your _pst again. Gates will give you what your school determines is reasonable room and board. If you choose to live above that amount, you will have to pay the balance.

Hello everyone,

I was names a QuestBridge finalist but I was not matched to any schools and I am continuing the regular decision process. On the accomplishment tab, should I state I was a QuestBridge Finalist or will that make my chances to get the GMSP lower?
