Gates Millennium - 2006-2007

O, thnx. I doubt they would pay for self help though since it was used in calculating the unmet portion. I think i should just turn them down if they dont pay for my self help. Its only $4.

turn them down?!?! ARE YOU CRAZY? but I think they do pay for self help. just not EFC.

My problem is, most of my private schools gave me wonderful aid… except some schools gave me a high EFC 10000+ when my FAFSA EFC was 800. So… Gates can’t do much in that case! :(

Hopefully I can negotiate the package to include more loans or something in place of teh EFC so Gates can pay for it…

why would they give you that high of an EFC? I don’t undestand.

No clue… vega you’re at your quota man.

I just deleted all my PMs.

Can gates pay for travel expenses such as visiting schools!?

Gates pays for a lot of things I know. My friend got the scholarship 3 years ago and this past summer gates paid for here to go to China because she wanted to learn chinese…that’s luxury!!!

what?! so theyll pay for me to go to japan? cuz i really wanna go. im in japanese class now.

you might have to do a program in japan or something cause she does something over there…i mean its not like she said 'oh yeah…let me just fly to China now cause I like it"…but yeah I believe they pay for enrichment stuff like that. I’ll ask next time i hear from her.

i feel so sad. i did the whole apps and forgot to click “submit!”

Why is there so much speculation -and fabulation- about what Gates will pay or not? It is spelled out on the website:

What constitutes unmet need will be determined by the financial aid office at the school you decide to attend. Gates will NOT pay any part of your EFC, but all the remaining expenses will be covered. Loans will be converted into grants.

As far as Gates sending you to a summer program to study Chinese as Keenya reports … that won’t happen. Gates does not cover summer school, except for students who graduate after the summer program. All disbursements by Gates will be handled via your school financial aid office, and all expenses have to be listed on an official COA form from your school. Study abroad is acceptable but only for regular academic programs sponsored by your school. Most definitely not an “enrichment” program.

Robot, Gates does not pay for the expenses of visiting schools. On the other hand, the figure that matters to establish the EFC is the one on your SAR/FAFSA form. If a school establishes a higher contribution through the Profile or other mechanism, it will simply increase the unmet need. In case of doubt, ask the school to fill a copy of the Gates form and fax it to you.

Eugh…he comes in and corrects us :)

does anyone receive mail on sunday?

nah man. lol. just wait till monday. go read a book. i recommend some potter.

Should I just give up hope? Because I haven’t received anything about the advancing to the second round or anything from gates at all…

well, they have already notified some winners…

I know there has been a lot of talk about what exactly Gates covers and I have tried to figure it out for my situation, but I am unable to. I received my financial aid package yesterday from a school I am considering. According to the package, my family contribution is about $5000 (no loans); however, my EFC is around 1800. So would my Gates scholarship be for about $3200?

hey keenya, tomorrow when you call, what questions will you ask them?

I’m going to be straight forward. “I called the hotline over the weekend and it welcomed me as a scholar. Does this mean I got the scholarship?” if they say ‘no’ or ‘we are still making a decision’ I’m gonna ask them about the forms the machine is asking for and I’m just going to make sure they have all the forms I sent to them already. Also, I’m going to see if they will give me a more definite time frame of when I will find out if I won :)
