Hey I won the scholarship. But does anyone know if we get free laptops with the scholarship?

I Bonnitadee am on the east coast. Reside in VA going to MD for school. I do not know if I got it yet. We will know each other by screen name. lol

based on my school’s budget and estimation, i’ll be getting $11,800 a year for my apartment. i<3 gates.

Nothing Again Today In Nj (hsf)!!!

Frog Prince, see my earlier post (think 580) - I believe that amount would be for room and board. In other words for your apartment and your food. Don’t spend it all on a Trump Tower apartment. :)

GMS does pay for med school ONLY if your in an MD/PhD program

—^^^^^-----
“GMS does pay for med school ONLY if your in an MD/PhD program”

Again, that is NOT correct. Gates specifically designates the MD program as a “first professional” degree and will NOT fund any part of it.

GMS funds a maximum of four years for **ONLY the PhD component of the MD/PhD ** dual program of study that have been formally developed, structured, and promoted by an academic institution.

Awards will NOT be made in graduate areas of study such as business, humanities, medicine, law, social sciences, and theology.

For future references, GMS designates the following as the “first professional” degrees:

Chiropractic (DC, DCM)
Dentistry (DDS, DMD)
Medicine (MD)
Optometry (OD)
Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Rabbinical and Talmudic Studies (MHL, Rav)
Podiatry (PodD, DP, DPM)
Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
Law (LLB, JD)
Divinity/Ministry (MDiv)
Business (MBA, MSM)

I still haven’t gotten anything and I am with UNCF.

Soo… anyone know if we get free Laptops tooo??? and does anyone know how many days the Scholar Conference will last?

i think the only way you can get a laptop is if your counselor increases your cost of attendance.

Darn! My bro gotta full-ride(not GMS) and THEY included a laptop w/ the scholarship! I want that. Oh well, can’t complain because I got GMS. :)

Are these all fabrications? Gates ONLY covers unmet need, which is cost of attendance - EFC. Nothing more. Nothing less.

there is a way to get GMS to get you a laptop. I remember someone telling me to deal with your counselor and persuade her to increase the COA.

ohhh cool. And for clarification… by counselor you mean my COLLEGE counselor (not high school counselor)?

College counselor.

Okay, I successfully negotiated my financial aid package from Penn:

Financial Aid Notice:
Educational expense budget for the academic year $47,880
Expected Family Contribution $3,950
Expected Parent Contribution $1,800
Expected Student Contribution $2,150
Financial Aid Eligibility $43,930
Your Financial Aid Awards:
Grant
Estimated Pell Grant $3,700
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) $4,000
Jade Wong Scholarship $4,000
Penn Grant $26,930
Workstudy
Federal Work-Study (FWS) $2,675
Loan
Federal Stafford Loan $2,625
Total Financial Aid Eligibility $43,930

My EFC from Penn is $3,950, but my FAFSA EFC is $800.

From what I understand, Gates will cover my loans + work study, which amounts to $2,625 + $2,675 = $5,300.

Does Gates also pay for the difference between Penn’s EFC and the FAFSA EFC: $3,950 - $800 = $3,150?

This would bring the value of the award up from $5,300/year to $5,300 + $3,150 = $8,450/year.

Hey GMS scholars,

How are you paying the deposit fee? With your own money?

My deposit fee is waived for Northwestern…

I have a question. It says gates pays for unmet need…but in my fin aid package NU did not include books and supplies costs, personal expenses and trasnsportation…they put that to the side as extra costs…does gates pay for those?
