Ditto. You all will do great. You deserve it

hello??? does anyone know the answer to my question…??? i would appreciate some response!!!

slacker, there are 50 pages to this thread. perhaps you should restate your question and not just expect someone to go looking for it.

slacker, the only way you can get a definite answer is to call the gates people. your 4k EFC is above the pell grant cutoff. you need to contact them.

thanks vega…

Hi this is bonnitadee. Let me know if you did not receive my private message lil1onisgirl.

slacker, let us know their answer.

this is messed up.

my financial aid letter from UCLA said
my COA was 23,291
my EFC was 1615
i got 12,676 in federal and university grants

after all this i had to take care of 9000 bucks for which the UC said i can take out 6500 in loans and do 2500 in work study.

wouldn’t the 9000 bucks be considered unmet aid technically, but the GMS coordinator at UCLA put these 9000 bucks down as my “self help” basically saying that my unmet aid is $0. I think this is BS. I should be able to get the money from GMS, after all i did win the scholarship and whats the point if i am still gonna end up 26000 in debt after just undergraduate college.

i mean okay maybe she can consider work study as self help, even that shouldn’t considered so because i didn’t volunteer for that but earlier i though i gotta do what i gotta do. but now i don’t have to do it, i have scholarship that can pay that, but still i am willing to take care of the 2500 from work study, but seriously, how exactly can they put down loans as financial aid. that is just wrong.

i’ve looked all on the Gates site and can’t find an answer to this question. does anyone know if the scholarship transfers with you if you decide to change colleges in the future?

wait. gates doesnt pay for loans?
Xiggi…im back to being confused again

it should technically, because that is unmet aid, but i don’t why she is screwing up like that i sent her a verry professional looking email, hopefully she will respond. I mean i think event he work study is unmet aid, because work is voluntary especially if oyu have a scholarship like this one. It shouldn’t be mandatory, that means the whole 9000 is unmet covered by GmS, but i will be happy if she at least gives me 6500 so i don’t get loans this year, next year i will deal with her face to face.

Speak to your officer OVER THE PHONE.

I did so and mailed my sheet.

In the end, I am only paying 500/year for college even though my EFC was over 4000 and my FAFSA EFC is 800. Also, Gates will pay for living expenses and a personal laptop which I have the liberty to buy over summer. If I had not spoken with my adviser, this may have not been the case.

when we call will they tell me who the officer is and do i wait until my university sends them the sheet back? My efc for my uni says 2,900 but on my FAFSA it says 367…does my advisor work that out?
Robotfood…PM me!!

the officer at the university??? right,
he is the person who filled out the form???
and about the laptop how do you get that???

Hey guys… NO ONE ON THIS FORUM KNOWS ANYTHING (except Xiggi)… so CALL YOUR SCHOOL and find out firsthand. If you haven’t noticed, there are never definite answers on this board. We are all confused. Ever since Xiggi told me to actually contact the school, everything has worked out. I’m sure the same will go for all of you!

Good luck everyone!

“i’ve looked all on the Gates site and can’t find an answer to this question. does anyone know if the scholarship transfers with you if you decide to change colleges in the future?”

Yes, the Gates follows YOUR school choice.

The scholarship renews every year. This means that you will file a new FAFSA/PROFILE every year. This information will be sent to the school of your choice. If you apply for a transfer, you will send the form to the new school.

“i mean okay maybe she can consider work study as self help, even that shouldn’t considered so because i didn’t volunteer for that but earlier i though i gotta do what i gotta do. but now i don’t have to do it, i have scholarship that can pay that, but still i am willing to take care of the 2500 from work study, but seriously, how exactly can they put down loans as financial aid. that is just wrong.”

Financial aid takes various forms: grants, work-study, and loans. Except in the very rare cases where a loan is provided directly by THE SCHOOL, Gates will replace all loans and the work study with a Gates grant. Your only obligation should be your Federal EFC. However, not that some schools are hard-headed and impose a minimum summer earning. Brown University has such policy.

“when we call will they tell me who the officer is and do i wait until my university sends them the sheet back? My efc for my uni says 2,900 but on my FAFSA it says 367…does my advisor work that out?

Ask the financial officer at NU to break down the EFC and prsent the Federal EFC only. The difference should go as an unmet need. Most schools have some experience with Gates and they know that Gates funds the difference.

Allow me to add one very important comment:

The Gates officers and your school are genuinely interested in making the financial work for you. The process might not be as streamlined as you would hope because you have to merge two institutions that have their own mechanisms and procedures. In this case, since the funds do come from Gates, expect them to insist on having the Gates form filled properly. If there are discrepancies between your award letter, your FAFSA numbers, and the Gates form, expect the Gates people to ask for a clarification from your school. Again, there is nothing adversarial in this relation and you should remember to remain as diplomatic as possible with both parties, as it is in YOUR best interest.

Regarding the computer, most people do NOT get funding for one. It depends on the school definition of the COA and the type of program you are registered in. Pratt, for instance, makes a computer a requirement and is a component of the COA. Most schools do not have such requirement. If it works for you, great! If not, do not be greedy.

Lastly, once your forms are filled completely and correctly, you can relax. The Gates will send a check to your home that is payable to YOU and to the school. This means that you cannot cash it. You will need to take your Gates award letter and the check to your school financial aid office, and endorse it to the school. Since the check should include money for your books, travel expenses, and incidentals, you should receive a refund from your school. This, however, depends on the level of your EFC.
