Gates Millennium - 2006-2007

Its not just about ur grades and need. I have a 3.6 avg and my EFC was 367. and I got the scholarhsip. But I also was editor in chief of an national teen magazine, study at Oxford for a summer, etc…my essays were awesome, to me anyway…and having a noble prize nominee and award winning journalist be my recommendor didnt hurt at all…people always think its about the bare stats but it really isnt.

Yeah it isn’t just stats at all, the other 3 semi-finalists at my school had the numbers (GPA) and I just barely qualified with a 3.5 unweighted. The two students with the lowest GPAs of the 4 of us, recieved the GMS. However, I think the PELL Grant qualification disqualified the other two. This whole experience has been just phenominal because I can remember back to the start of junior year when my UW GPA was in the 2s. I asked my reccomender and nominator the day before the deadline so I was not expecting to win at all. I think my essays helped me.

I assumed that if a semi-finalist meets the GPA/Need requirement, they would win the scholarship, but apparently this isn’t the case.

Well I thought my essays were pretty strong also because I’m in AP Lit and was in AP Language last year and my nominator wrote a strong recommendation for me because she is one of my counselors and specifies in GMS… Sigh… I thought essays and recommendations were takin care of in the first process and after that it was just grades and financial need…

I also thought that they took care of all that stuff during the first stage. I haven’t gotten my letter yet, and I am getting uncomfortable. I sent in all my stuff 3/20, I got a 3.9 gpa, and my efc is 0.

Oh, hmm… well the date on my letter was from the 18th… so I don’t know… I hope you get it… The “We Regret” letter sucks.

well im sure the rest of you will find out soon…i wish i could look back at my application…i didnt print it out

what does Gates scholarship exactly cover? does it pay for the self-help component of your financial aid? I found this on the GMS website:

“A GMS award is determined by unmet need based on the financial aid award package that will be provided by the Nominee’s college or university. It will help pay the cost of attendance, which includes tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for the academic year. Only Nominees who are selected as finalist will be requested to have a financial aid award package provided to GMS.”

It says nothing about the self-help or work-study job. I talked to my college FA director and she says gates scholarship normally covers self-help but after reading this from the GMS website, I am confused. Can someone help clarify for me?

Guys, seriously. Xiggi has repeated it a million times…NO MED, BUSINEES OR ANY OTHER PROFESSIONALS SCHOOLS…BOOKS, TUITION, LIVING EXPENSES, ETC–WHATEVER THE COLLEGE FACTORS IN WILL BE COVERED, MEANING WHAT THE UNMET NEED IS AFTER SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS. THE ONLY MONEY NOT COVERED IS EFC
Did everyone read that clearly? :)

ok…i need some help. I was selected as a scholar but there is one problem. When i sent in my SAR after being selected as a finalist, my efc was 3205. However, the school said i did not add in one line which mean my efc is now 4124. I recieved my scholar letter but now my efc is 4124. Does this mean i am no longer elgible? Also, my father’s income is substantially lower than what was on the fafsa…this means that my efc will be less and we have made a formal appeal. Anyway, i am ok with the scholarship or not?

of the people who were already selected as scholars
who is from HSF and when did u recieve your letter?

hsf got it today

OMG im soo happy for u Congrats
were are you from?
wow i was getting really scared because my firend got it today and it was a we regret to tell you letter so i thought that all the letters that were left were the"we regret to tell u" letters
but i still dont get anything i guess i have to wait till monday

thanks for the kind reponse…im from south carolina…but does anyone know the anwer to my previous question?

meh, i didn’t get it. but i guess i knew already since i didnt qualify for pell according to the SAR (but then i did qualify according to dartmouth and brown, so whatever). i’m not too sad since i’ve already got everything covered that CAN be covered (except that darn EFC of course, but can’t do anything about that).

good luck to everyone!

damn…i mean…one day i gave my cousin a dollar when he asked me.

keenya what national teen magazine is this.

and…my recommender…i mean she wasnt a nominee for the nobel peace prize BUT she has eaten in everyf ancy restuarant in atlanta. and i mean. doesnt get much better than that.

sorry. just tryin somethin out. dont mind me.

I did not get the scholarship either. I thought that if selected as a finalist if you qualified you would receive it. I am disapointed but that is how life is, sometimes you get it and sometimes you do not. I had a 3.9 and EFC of 0. Congrads to all that got it. And to those that did not I share your pain and dismay. It would have been truly wonderful to be selected. However, I can make do without it, I will just have to work harder, as I always have had to. I have not seen the letter yet. My aunt called and told me while I was away that I did not get selected.

Its called GUMBO Teen Mgazine. I just passed on the torch to the new editor in January. But here’s the website www.mygumbo.com…and why does it say ‘bootyhead’ where my SN should be?

I didn’t get the scholarship, but I am happy in a way. I feel better and it also makes me more determined. IT’S MOTIVATION.

I’m so sorry to those who did not receive the scholarship. I wish you all happiness and success in your future endeavors. Don’t give up!
