Gates Millennium - 2007-2008

as in you got into the ‘second phase’ ?

yea, confucius, i did and so did a few other people on the board.

…did they email you or did you call them and ask?

I received an email then a couple days later, I got the same letter via postal mail.

aww i lost T.T. Gj to those who are moving on.

E-mails and letters are still being sent out.

You should not give up just yet.

the second phase means you are a finalist because after you send in the docs, they tell you if you are a GMS Scholar or not

I got selected as a finalist to my surprise…after I sent in my application in December, i thought that this scholarship was impossible…and honestly forgot about it…but when I got that email and the letter in the mail, and the call…I got my hope back and my faith came back alive…i believe that I can do this and so can all of you…soo many of u are worrying too much…just hang in there…and believe that you can do…and remember all things are possible!!..u’ll be alright no matter wat…there are sooo many scholarships out there…stay hopeful…i really hope that I get this scholarship though…so good luck to all of you…

Have to say, with the high number of paricipants in this scholarship, while it is worth a try, you can’t expect a victory. As anyone admit, not one here whould say they don’t care if they win or not, but I have to say there other ways to make it and I wish the best of luck to all who don’t and all who do. Everyone deserve the best they can get.

Since it is by race… any asians got letters yet (I feel ping of irony after saying what said above I think…)?

Ant8904: extravaganza, dmphan, and dc88 are all Asians and they already received notifications for the second phase. I am in the same boat as you. I am Asian and haven’t received anything yet… :(

How many African Americans? I’ve only seen one on the board so far…and they may be operating on “colored people” time if anyone knows what I mean lol :P

^^ hahahaha i get it… :p

:p at CP time. I’m African/Black American

i’m African American also

Just2Fitz:
Another student from my school who applied to Gates got notified last week. So, she’s in the second phase now. I don’t think the chances of having more than 1 finalist is possible in each school–or at least in my school.

College (Wen):

Call Gates immediately to see if they are willing to shed light. I know that many are still waiting for more selections to go out. (I will respond to the email l8er on but it’s coming, lol)

last year 2 people from the 90 person senior class got it…
i was hoping for the same this year!!
yeah, i’ll probably call them…

There are a total of 141 students in my (senior) class. I hope so too, morangotango, that Gates will do the same thing this year–maybe select 2 students each–or every other–school.

Maybe GMS is only looking for students who take 869586975635 AP classes each year. I’ve only taken one (APUSH) last year and one (APES) this year, and also taking Honors courses. My friend who got selected for the second phase has been taking many AP classes and she has a higher GPA.

My school CAP advisor said, “Don’t ever doubt yourself. You tried your best on the application and you were honest.” But isn’t it quite upsetting that no matter how the applicant try, he/she just isn’t what GMS is looking for?

Just2Fitz, I don’t know if GMS are willing to shed light… What can I say? x_x I feel speechless, though I am not… I can’t say that I am not upset. In fact, I am quite glad the other student got selected. She happened to be a close friend of mine… but…still upset…

Hang in there everyone. Good luck to those who haven’t received notifications yet. Remember, it’s life. Life is not always fair, but good luck! Smile.

nods in agreement.

It seems likely I’m not going to come out victorious in the venture. I have to agree with the post above me said, congrats to all who were able, and fight on for all who weren’t so lucky. I would be lying if I said I’m perfectly content, and likely I would be lying to myself I won’t feel ambivalence if someone I know wins. Still good luck to all.

BTW college18, I know two people who won the Gates Scholarship and he was able to coach the second person into victory. It is now the AP class or so on that wins the scholarship, it is what you said on the essays and the recommendations. I worked hard to produce my theme on my essays to say who I am, sadly, I guess it seems that it is comming out as I feared that my theme doesn’t stack up to the competition or perhaps I only gained mediocre recommendations from my nominator and recommender. I guess that was my achille’s heel.

yea, i heard the essays are huge for this program
its the part of your application that can make you or break you
