does gates cover everything that the college didn’t give you in grants, or do you still have to pay your efc? If so, is it the fafsa efc or the college’s calculated efc?

What happens if I win other scholarships?
I won another scholarship and am planning to enter 3 essay contests. Whats the deal? What happens to the money I won.

i have 5 smaller scholarships and 2 other big ones i’m also a semifinalist for so i’m still waiting for the notification on those. i hope i get to keep most of the money though that would be nice, just an extra spending stipend. i know my friend had her ronald mcdonald house scholarship reduced by a lot when she notified them of other scholarships she won, it went from like 9000 per semester down to like 2000

I am a sophomore wondering about the GMS. I know its kinds early. Can anyone just sum up what the GMS is? does it really pay for all your college years? What are the requirements? I have academic excellence(GPA 3.7,58 out of 446) na dshown some leadership skills(student council, many clubs, running for vp). What else should i do to increase my chances?

haha…I am pretty sure that your school will find some way to ensure that you don’t have extra spending money.

Gates does not cover you EFC. It will take away your loans and workstudy.

Gates is a scholarship for minority students that pays for any unmet need for college. All scholars can pursue any undergraduate degree for up to 5 years and then there are select graduate school programs that Gates will also fund. In total, Gates provides up to 10 years of study for scholars. They aim to take away student loans and workstudy. You can go to www.gmsp.org for more info.

hey guys, first time on this site, end of senior year and i finally found it,dont i feel smart but yea whats up wit gms? Im AA(African American) from South Florida, got the letter for the second phase and sent the materials a lil over a week ago after I got a phone call from them warning me to do it ASAP. Im pretty sure I qualify for the pell grant… EFC just slightly below 3000.

Hi, pdavid954! Welcome to College Confidential (or as we call it, CC). Anyway, I just joined a little over a month ago, so you’re not the only one. According to your EFC, I’m pretty sure you qualify for the Pell Grant. I believe the maximum EFC to qualify for the grant is 3850, so you should be in good hands.

If you qualify, are you set for four years?

Or does GMS evaluate your financial status every year?

And do you lose the scholarship if your EFC is too high in your second year?

This is my fear.

you will not be able to get a renewal for the years when your efc is above the maximum (which I think is 3750)

That is what I feared.

What if my EFC matches the year after rejection?

Hey, once again I am in Gates '06. Every year you must submit a new financial aid report to Gates because every year your aid is going to change. Also, for those students who get a new expense that they weren’t expecting, Gates allows you to ask for an increase 1 time a year.

As long as you qualify for a Pell Grant, you can renew your Gates Scholarship

How do I contact Gates? I have left many messages and have yet to have on returned. Is their any staff members that actually reviews my messages?

Will they cover the cost of a laptop and summer terms? I am staying on my prospective campus for as long as possible, will tehy cover summer research expenses (housing)?

Question to GMSP winners

Is it still worth it to apply to other scholarships. I have 4 or 5 essays already typed up. My sister’s friend at Emory told me that scholarship money that she received after she won Gates Millenium was placed in her bank account.

Is it still worth it to finish the the essay contests?

I had a question.

So, I went to see this thing on this financial aid page for Cal, where it asked how much money I was getting from certain scholarships. One of the scholarships listed was the Gates Scholarship. So, does that mean that I got it? Does the Gates foundation contact the schools beforehand? I’m confused. Gracias!

did u input that? otherwise u probably got it and did it list an amount for the gates category?

hey, Y2k, Gates does not cover any summer term except for students who simply need that last term to graduate. Gates doesn’t necessarily cover your computer. What you can do is ask your school to include the expense of a computer in your financial aid report. Most likely the school will give you a loan. Gates will then see your loan and pay for that loan, which pays for your computer.

The way to contact Gates is to call 1-877-690-4677. You can ask to speak to a counselor. I have a question, did any of you guys actually get the letter saying that you are scholars? I feel like you all simply passed 1st round and that’s why you don’t really have all that much access. Anyhow, you should be able to get in touch with someone at Gates.

DSharC: I received my letter awarding the scholarship on 3-26-07. There has been several others who have received their scholarships.
