Gates Millennium - 2007-2008

mnkybrand: I faxed my information on 3-13-07 and I received my scholarship on 3-26-07.
I went to " Staples" to fax my information. You should try Staples, Kinkos, or Office Max. Make sure you fax your information and follow up with a confirmation phone call. Good Luck.

Everyone: I’m from Michigan

I haven’t heard from gates yet, but my friend has, so I assume I didn’t make the first round. What’s funny is that I know a girl who got it last year but is doing horribly right now with a 2.0 GPA. I suppose they put so much value into community action and hours that they sometimes overlook academic drive and potential.

i dont think its that community action is weighted more
i think the most important thing is to really be honest and show your personality through your essays and be a leader in your school

Geez, now I wish that I faxed my information sooner. I just faxed my documents this week so we’ll see what happens. Seems like everyone is getting their scholarships. Oh well, I guess I have to wait.

I mailed all my stuff on the 17th.

thanks trev and y2k, i faxed my transcript and admissions letters on the 13th of March, but I was still waiting for my SAR at the time. I just faxed that today at kinkos. I’m hoping to find out soon, this week has been stressful, esp. with notifications from ivy schools coming out tomorrow. oh, and i’m from Utah (apaisf)

does anyone know whether the gates scholarship is transferable if i decide to apply it towards a different school come 2nd semester or sophomore year?

donut4`, I haven’t heard anything yet, either…but I thought they notified everyone even if the person didn’t make the first round?

Does anyone know whether a laptop can be considered as an expense for the purpose of the scholarship?

“Does anyone know whether a laptop can be considered as an expense for the purpose of the scholarship?”

Only if you school makes it mandatory for you to own one. Certain engineering schools require all incoming students to have one and even charge them for on one their first bill if they didn’t buy one yet. Gates will pay for it if only if it is mandatory.

Does anyone know when rejection letters come out?
I know i’m not getting the gates scholarship, but my parents seem to be really hopeful since my Bro got it 4 years ago…and i don’t really feel like breaking it to them that i didn’t get it.

mperezrosas, they notify all the people who made the first round first, then they notify those who haven’t made it. Several people have told me that they’ve been contacted already. I wish they would send out the all the decisions out at the same time.

so it’s definite? if we havent gotten ANY notification so far since we turned in the application, then we havent gotten it? wow that is depressing since right now i’m looking at… 120,000 in debt

does anything know anything about the apaisf scholarship? because i applied for that back in december and was just notified that i would be moving on to the second phase of that as well. would i still need to resend all the materials again although i did it for gates who is in association with that organization?

I am in the Gates Class of 2006 and you (people who have been notified as making it past the first round) will not hear back from Gates until May.

No, Gates is serving as a rep. for that scholarship so they (apaisf) look to Gates to identify the recipients. All you have to do is follow the directions, which were given to you with you packet. Last year, we had to send in our letter of acceptance.

Will this cover me if I want to go to Pharmacy School.

DSharC: I am a GMS Class of 2007 (that sounds so good!!!) Am I allowed to retain any outside scholarships or will the scholarships reduce my Gates Scholarship? Thanks for any additional information. My senior year has been very busy and stressful waiting for the acceptance letters.

Ditto to Y2K question. I plan to attend Pharmacy School. My school has a 6 year plan. Will Gates cover at least 5 years of the program.

hahaha…CONGRATULATIONS ! Yes, Gates will cover any undergrad program for up to 5 years. In computing your award, Gates aims to take away things such as work-study and student loans. You give them the financial aid award from your college and they look only at that. If you have other scholarships then they simply help you and not hurt you. Gates doesn’t decrease your award. I have multiple scholarships as well and it wasn’t a problem for me.
