Guessing from the sn, Vietnamese.

I GOT THE ASPIAF scholar thing~!!!

wooohooo!!!

I didnt get it you guys…I was upset at first when I saw the mail, and when i saw that it was a small letter, I knew before i opened it. But then i got cheered up when I saw my financial aid package from Seattle University and I received a full ride…I was sooo happy.
Things that seem like they would get us down, seem that way until you actually have to deal with them.

I’m new to this whole College Confidential thing…well I just signed up anyways, but I’ve been reading this thread for the past couple of weeks. I was just wondering if there are any other Native Americans on here. I’m in the second phase, but I’m getting pretty antsy to hear something. I called the AIGC to see if they had received all of my faxed materials and he told me I would find out sometime this week…and holy I am getting pretty antsy.

All selected Scholars will be notified no later than May 1, 2007.

hey, i think someone was discussing this somewhere in this thread and i got the above sentence off the gmsp.org website.

Congratulations, Lecole206.

congrats dirty, when did you hear back? i just barely got the confirmation email back from aspiaf saying that they have recieved all of my materials but i’m still waiting to hear back from that scholarship as well.

Hey dani33elle…I am American Indian as well. I have been talking to the AIGC who handles our scholarships several times this past week. They are working on our scholarships and hopefully we will hear something soon.

Congratulations to the rest of you who have heard back !

Awesome… do you mind me asking what tribal affiliation you’re with? I also heard from a friend who got the scholarship last year and he said we have the smallest applicant pool…sooooo hopefully all works out okay Good Luck.

congrats to all who won the scholarship. I am going to apply for it my senior year. Hopefully I will get it.

I was wondering about the essay (since it is VERY important from what i read). What do you have to write about?

Also i know it might be a dumb question but what is an EFC? I read the whole discussion and many applicants were concerned about it.

actually its more like 9 essays and EFC stands for estimated family contribution.

nine essays!!! wow! ok so what are the nine essays about?

Discuss the subjects in which you excel or have excelled. To what factors do you attribute your success?

Discuss the subjects with which you had difficulty. What factors do you believe contributed to your difficulties? How have you dealt with them so they will not cause problems for you again? In what areas have you experienced the greatest improvement? What problem areas remain?

Briefly describe a situation in which you felt that you or others were treated unfairly or were not given an opportunity you felt you deserved. Why do you think this happened? How did you respond? Did the situation improve as a result of your response?

Discuss your short and long-term goals. Are some of them related? Which are priorities?

Discuss a leadership experience you have had in any area of your life - school, work, athletics, family, church, community, etc. How and why did you become a leader in this area? How did this experience influence your goals?

Discuss your involvement in and contributions to a community near your home, school, or elsewhere. Please select an experience different from the one you discussed in the previous question, even if this experience also involved leadership. What did you accomplish? How did this experience influence your goals?

Other than through classes in school, in what areas (non-academic or academic) have you acquired knowledge or skills? How?

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about that may help us evaluate your nomination, i.e., personal characteristics, obstacles you have overcome, etc.?

There were also a couple of prompts that were optional

I received my acceptance today! YAY!!!

Good luck to all those who are still waiting.

p.s. I am a bit confused though, I thought we were supposed to be notified if we became finalists? I never got that notification.

To all Gates Scholars: Has anyone sent his or her financial aid award letter to Gates? Should the letter be faxed or mailed? My letter did not give any details. It only stated that I was to send Gates a copy of my award letter. Any assistance will be appreciated.

I faxed my aid award a couple of days ago and I’m just waiting for GMS to tell me how much money they will be giving me.

i’m a dell scholar! i just barely found out like 30 minutes ago and to think that email was filtered out as junk haha. this makes me worry less about still not hearing back from the gates. although it’s only $20000 dispursed over 4 years, so about $5000 per semester can be requested.

mnky, thanks for the congrats.

I found out yesterday at 5 PM in the mail.

congrats on dell!

are any other GMS scholars having trouble with the website when you log in???

Sorry dani33elle…I just got your reply this morning. I am Shawnee, what tribe are you? And yes, we are the smallest pool I believe about 3% of all applications are American Indian. I have been working with the AIGC they called the Chief three times last week. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be selected. How about you? Have you heard back yet?
