Gates Millennium - 2007-2008

havent heard anythin yet from gates, was in the second phase… i called the other day and they said they were sending out their last notifications this week. is that good or bad sign for me as a secind phaser? Seems like some ppl just got their certifications yesterday… so it seems positive but I dont want to get my hopes up.

Does that mean that we will definitely know by the end of next week?

yup.

HAS TO BE before May 1.

I received my decision today.

I did not get the scholarship. My EFC was too high.

I wish everyone good luck on their decisions!

i’m from california

i submitted my information around march 27th
and i found out around april 4th

i had a question…can the Gates be used for summer session?

Same thing here, ManU. tear XD

I’m a GATES SCHOLAR!!! God is good!!!

Found out on Friday!!

My nominator and recommender actually found out b4 me…lol

I received my rejection letter this weekend. Congratulations to those of you who made it. dani33ellle have you heard anything yet?

Nicolby- i’m sorry to hear that, it’s sad hey?..i got my letter this weekend too…and it wasn’t a good one…oh well though I guess…it just would have helped SO much in grad. school. I hope everything works out for you anyways.

ps…do you mind me asking your efc? i qualified for a pell grant and all…but i’m wondering if i was on the upper end… you can message me if you want.

I have a question…does gates cover summer session? Because i’m doing summer at UF…

And another thing, I’ve been calling them and the number is always busy no matter wat…has this happened to anyone else?

“does gates cover summer session?”

Only in college senior year and if you need it for graduation.

“I’ve been calling them and the number is always busy no matter wat…has this happened to anyone else?”
There are hundred of people calling right now regarding their status and questions regarding their scholarship. Have some patience and you’ll get your turn.

To everyone that keeps getting a busy signal, try calling though the human resources number, you can find it at gmsp.org, that’s what I did and I got through, just ask to be connected to someone in the Gates office…

Hello there!

I asked my GMS advisor about the details concerning extra funding for personal expenses such as laptops and dorm materials. She wrote that GMS only looks at the fin. aid notification and for increase changes in the notification’s budget, we must contact a financial aid officer. By fin. aid officer, does she mean the one that is from our college? I am an incoming freshman, so I don’t know who is my fin. aid officer. Since the fin. aid notifications are due in May, and I won’t start school till August, does that mean that I can still ask for added expenses like a laptop during the Fall and send in my updated fin. aid notification?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I also tried doing it that way, but the answer is no. Gates will only review ur finaid letter once a year. Basically, u have to hope that ur college included some personal expenses in the COA, then u will have some money.

Does anybody have an answer to my last post? I really want to know. Thanks!

Hello there,
I read somewhere that Gates will cover all “unmet need.” However, what about those colleges (most of the Ivies now) that meet 100% of your need? Does the Gates just replace your school’s financial aid then…which doesn’t really help?

Any info on this would be appreciated; sorry if it’s already been addressed.

Thank you!

ceecee, look around page 30 of this thread, it talks a lot about how gates works and stuff. it really helped me so hopefully it answers your questions too.

Hi all! I stumbled upon this forum whie looking up Gates Scholarship info!

I’m a 2007 Gates Scholar! Whooo!!!

I’ve been skimming the threads here and thought I’d join, so, Hellooo!!
Congrats to all scholarship winners!!

I just had a few questions/comments:

Well, I am an anxious person so I have been trying to get through to Gates on the number in the award letter and it tells me that if I am a scholar to enter my social and pin and i do but it says I’m not on file. Do I have to speak to someone directly? Also, the gmsp site isn’t updated for 07 scholars yet, do we just have to wait till we have our id and pass? I may just be being impatient… :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, while skimming the threads, if i read correctly, someone said that if you were to receive the Gates and then receive other scholarships, that it would not end up being money in your pocket no matter the school, but i disagree… When i have spoken to my University representative, who has worked with Gates scholars, she told me that my first week of school i would receive excess money in my bank account. Cause i have received others and i hope that money in my account because i am not sure how much my university figures personal expenses. I dunno…

Anywho, just thought i’d give my thoughts. Sorry for the long post… It’s my first so i deserve some slack! :P

Oh, and Gates selection is closed now, right?

the policy really depends on the school…for instance, after Gates sent my check then my school gave me any leftovers…however, some schools will find a way to make it so that you do not receive any money back. there really isn’t a “one answer fits all” to that question

-yes, if your info is not on file then you need to call because having your information is very important.

-yes, Gates selection closed January 14th this year or whenever the application was due for you all

if the school doesn’t give the student the extra money left from the scholarship then where would they send it to? back to the gates foundation? i thought that the school was supposed to give back the excess to the student since gates says that they cover unmet need which includeds book fees/living expenses… so shouldn’t the excess be covering book fees/living expenses? if any current scholars can shed some light on this situation it’d be great. Thanks a lot!
