Gates Millennium Scholarship 2009-2010

Wait, now I have a general questions about Fin. Aid and GMS…

How does GMS give you money to buy a laptop? If they don’t give you a stipend how does the money eventually get to you? Do you simply buy it and get reimbursed?

In the case of my D last year, her college gave her a temporary loan to cover the amount, then submitted the invoice to the Gates people, and they reimbursed the school.

has anyone recieved a rejection letter?

yea wendy! your assumption better be true! lol. These documents are just to confirm that you’re a good student. If you got the pell grant and have a good gpa, you have nothing to worry about. You should be getting plenty of money from the school you’re going to attend and GMS!

geeze i wrote 8 intense essays with literally over 25 hours of work.
all this extra curricular and 4.4 gpa and ZERO EFC and what do i get…
nothing…

sigh*

…

i really hope they send out more letters/emails of the sort…

has anyone received a rejection letter?

How much is the Gates Millennium Scholarship worth?

bobslove,
I know def how you feel,
it’s kind of like we’re looking for answers of “why” but I doubt we’ll get answers on why,
I just kind of feel like everything I’ve done is devalued now =/

thanks for understanding…
seriously my parents are clueless to paying for college and they figure I will take care of everything!!

sucks being a second generation asian with parents who can hardly speak or understand english…

haha, same here
except I have the pressure of two older sisters who both got the millenium
I’m asian as well - vietnamese
I think I’m done waiting now, I’m ready to move on … as sad as I am

like seriously, being the first generation to go to college is tiresome!! >.<
bobslove & harharsayz i totally understand where ur coming from…i’m drowning in expectations too >.<
but this waitin really got me, y dont they just send out rejection letters once and for all already!!! i rather find out that i got rejected early than having to wait like this -.-

to everyone who hasn’t received anything, try not to dwell on it. i know it seems hard right now, and i feel like crap just thinking about it. we all poured our hearts and souls into those f**king essays right? and we get nothing back. not even the rejection letter yet. rejection is a part of life i guess, and we’re all supposed to move on and blah blah blah. still, it hurts a lot, knowing that you put your best into something, and then just getting dropped like this. there are better things in life. i’ve never actually felt this depressed before, partly because i don’t want to disappoint myself, and other ppl. and now college is coming up, and there are other things to worry about too, such as keeping your grades up. so there’s actually no TIME to dwell on it even if i wanted too…

to end on a positive note: everyone, just keep on working hard! and try your best in everything that you do. so you have NO regrets. look towards the future~!!

I totally agree with you all! I am so upset and tired of waiting. I just don’t understand why I didn’t get to the finalist stage. I worked so hard on those essays! They seemed perfect to me! Now im struggling trying to find ways to pay for college & I just don’t know what to do! I wish they would go ahead and send the rejection letter because part of me is clinging to a little bit of hope and its driving me crazy. I know when I see the letter, I said I wouldn’t get upset but I know I am! :(

same here,i just want my rejection letter… i spent alot of time on those essays as well… too bad~ that’s life i guess.

sigh ~

sent in all the materials.

it’s going to suck if i don’t get this scholarship :-(

it’d be kind of weird for them to reject an early MIT admit with and EFC of 0.

i don’t know… i guess it’s probably happened before…

good luck to everyone

also: after i sent in my materials i called HSF and they told me that i was ready to go. they also told me that starting 16-17 of this month we (don’t know if it was all GMS finalist or just hispanic GMS finalist) would be able to check the status of our materials online.

so: GET TO WORK ON IT!

i sincerely hope everyone does get the scholarship. good luck!

I talked to the people at the GMSP main office.

They said that all applicants were notified last week, either by snail mail or by e-mail. The notifications did not go out in waves, but they did send e-mails to the Finalists first and then letters to everyone. Based on that, all the applicants should be notified – unless they had a bad address – by Wednesday of this week.

The GMSP people also said that not everyone who becomes a Finalist gets the scholarship. They ask for additional information and then confirm that what applicants say in their submissions is accurate.

Oh! One other thing, they will notify all the Finalists at the same time this year, around mid-April. They said “definitely get your documents in,” but that everyone would be told around the same time.

i would be eternally grateful to the Gates Foundation and Hispanic Scholarship Fund if i were to receive this scholarship because i really would be stuck in a ditch (due to several personal circumstances) if i weren’t to get this type of help…

i know each one of us has our own stories to tell…so im praying that we all get it.

ok so I just talked to someone from GMS. After submitting these materials, they are used to verify against the information you provided in your application. I repeat Verify, there are a total of 1000 scholars every year. If you meet the pell grant and have the gpa, then you should be receiving good news mid april.

Random note here: so did u guys actually study for the SAT? just wondering b/c ive never taken the ACT …and only took the SAT 2 times… hence its horrible…(not a natural genius)

Ok so if I havet received anything, thats it? that means I didnt get the scholarship? and also has anyone in Texas received a letter??
