There are not many discussions about this hidden gem in the state of Georgia. As a member of CC for over a year, I wanted to add our experiences at GSCU for anyone who needed additional information.
We began our college tours a year ago and we visited several school in and out of the state of Georgia. Since my son met the requirements for the Zell Miller Scholarship in Georgia, we focused on schools where the tuition would be met since we had earned this in Georgia.
We signed up for their Junior Day in April and headed to Milledgeville. As we arrived in town, I immediately fell in love with the quaintness of the area. It felt like a college town. It felt like Athens before Athens became part of Atlanta. The campus is compact yet spread out. There is one dorm directly on campus for Honor students, several dorms a few blocks away from main campus and then they have an entire complex a mile or so away from campus with an athletic/health center, ball fields and apartments that are part of on-campus housing.
The admission team does an excellent job with organizing your visit. It was one of the most informative tours we attended out of the 7 that we did over the year. The information presented gave us things to look at in other tours as we moved forward. They are very open about rates, fees, etc that other schools try to hide.
After Junior Day, we officially visited two more times. Once for Presidential Scholars Day and again for Honors Preview Day. We interviewed on a Friday for Presidential Scholars and they told us we would know with two weeks. Within two weeks, our admissions counselor called me to let me know that she would be coming to my son’s school to personally present his scholarship to him. This would NEVER happen at a larger school. We have received scholarships from all of the schools where he was accepted and no one came in person to present. This was the deciding factor for my son. He decided that he could be known as a person and not a number at GCSU.
We enrolled prior to the Honors Day Preview. He enrolled on a Tuesday, had a schedule on Wednesday and that Friday, met with his academic advisor on that Friday. Again, this would never happen on a huge campus. Since our visit, he has been in contact with professors and can’t wait for his first day at GCSU.
We have many friends whose students attend GCSU. It may not be for everyone but if you are in the state of Georgia, you really need to add this to your list of schools to visit.
