I’m pretty sure I will be over the limit of 80 credits for UCB and UCLA by next spring, would it be better to drop a gen ed course or a prereq? Would dropping a class that fulfills one of those hurt my chances at all? I also took business calc 1&2 not knowing it didnt transfer to my major (science) so now I’m taking calc w/ trig 1&2. My current school will drop the credits for the business calc and I was wondering if UCs will also? Year of ochem and calc physics is so many credits -_- Thanks in advance guys!

Have you ever attended a 4 year school like a UC or CSU?

If you haven’t and your entire college career has been at community college, don’t worry, there is no cap for community college only students.

If you did take a semester or more at a 4 year university, then check to how close you are to meeting the UC minimum transfer requirements. If you don’t meet these minimum requirements, then you absolutely can not drop the classes needed for this. These requirements are here:

If you’ve already met those requirements, prioritize your major requirements.

feedayeen is correct, so long as they are community college credits, it doesn’t matter. I have 149.5 units complete and was accepted to multiple UC’s without issue.

Cant you only transfer 70? Do you pick which ones you transfer over or is it the first 70??

ohhh I guess I misread their websites, sorry guys! I’ve been at a CC and will be transferring from here so I guess I can take as many credits as I want. but wow 149.5 units…??? thats so many

So that means if Im over 70 and Im still taking major pre-reqs or satisfying IGETC… they will still count but it just wont count as units and I still need 60 semester units to graduate at a UC?? Sorry if I phrased this weird lol

70 units transfer toward your bachelors degree. The units are different than your classes when you go over 70. All the classes you took toward you major still apply toward your major and separate from that, 70 units from wherever transfer as undergrad units.

Hypothetical example situation: You go to UC and want to triple major in Engineering, English, and Oceanography. Transferring 70 units of specific classes could not possibly cover the lower division requirements for all three majors. The system notes completion of all lower division courses in all three majors, similar to a check mark indicating you have taken the class. The 70 units is more of a pool of undergrad credits that show you’ve done the work. I quote what has been quoted before but now hopefully with more clarity “Courses in excess of 70 semester (105 quarter) units will not receive unit credit but will receive subject credit and may be used to satisfy UC’s subject requirements.”

I totally forgot about my first question; is it better to drop a gen ed or major prereq? and for science majors, will doing a whole year of orgo and cal physics give me that much of an advantage? is year of ochem + only 1 semester of physics a disadvantage?
