General Airline Travel Discussion including trip insurance

You can take multiple trips of 70 day limits each. They have an expat insurance also that’s longer

Hmm maybe I should reconsider. No preexisting exclusion? That’s sweet. I have 15 days to cancel the Allianz. How much trip Cancellation coverage did you pick?

Uh oh, trustpilot’s reviews are worrisome for geoblue. https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.geobluetravelinsurance.com?page=3

I use Geo Blue, I’m on Medicare, too. I heard about it from the Rick Steve’s Travel Forum Board and my insurance agent who sold us our supplemental also recommended it.

Have you had to make a claim? The Trustpilot ratings were worrisome to me so right now I’m probably gonna just sit tight with the Allianz policy even though it doesn’t cover pre-existing because I waited too long purchase it.

I assumed the pre-existing would only be for this upcoming trip since I purchased it way before any future trips - anyone know?

Cost of medical care is inexpensive. You can Google it.
I have been sick few times while abroad. Most recently was in Japan. I had to go to an emergency room. The total cost was around $65. It included exam and medications.
When I was on a cooking trip in France, the host told us that they had a n American guest who injured her ankle on a train, a doctor came out to see her once and she had daily nurse visits. It cost her practically nothing.

That’s what have heard which is why I decided to get the “just in case” backup inexpensive coverage for this trip. Since it wasn’t going to cover pre-existing, I chose not to buy the Adderall plan. I’ve also covered cancellation interruption. It was a mistake, but I can revisit that when we travel again. I’m so tired of traveling right now, I would love to take a deep and just stay home for a while

We JUST went through this exercise for an upcoming 2-week trip to the EU. Things we looked for:

  1. Price vs. Coverage (as any insurance policy).
  2. Reputation: I tried very hard to find posts from those who actually USED the insurance, and not just pleased with the purchase process. Unfortunately, most posters have a complaint. You rarely read success stories.
  3. Primary coverage vs. Secondary coverage.
  4. Medical and Evac only. Our credit card covers some trip interruption / trip cancellation / baggage loss, etc. We also try to make refundable reservations (or allow credit) for nearly everything including airfare. This was not a tour package, and we often change our minds as we plan and tweak itineraries. There is definitely a premium when adding together all the refundable surcharges. But “Fully-Refundable for any reason” insurance is not what most people think it is, as there are limits.
  5. Fine print. This is a tough one. I tend to over-analyze, and can always find verbiage that allows an escape for the insurance company. Most evacuation, for instance is only to the nearest medical facility, and only “IF” (insert many caveats here). The IF could be the insurance company must pre-approve, or the local MD decides. I could never find what happens if you have a major incident, and need to stay in the foreign medical facility for an extended time. How does a travel partner cover their expenses? What if you want to come home to recuperate, but it would take medical transport, and the insurance company says ‘not yet’? To my knowledge, Medjet is the only policy that will take you where you want to go, but that is all they cover.

Squaremouth or InsureMyTrip allow comparisons. They sometimes offer levels of insurance not found on the Insurance site directly. They will also answer questions you might have on different policies.

FWIW, we chose Trip Insured International (through Squaremouth). We decided against an annual plan unless you travel more than 2x per year outside the US.

Aside: Some felt MedJet was valuable even in the US (i.e. if you have an event in a rural area, far from home). Our insurance works for any facility or MD that accepts Medicare, but I had never really considered that scenario before.

There are some useful comments on Allianz and GeoBlue travel insurance on Rick Steeve’s FB page.

Sounds like Allianz is much better about actually paying claims so we will go back to researching this.

Oops it cut off. The rest would need to be in the political forum.

AAA has a deal with Allianz too. Not got the energy to call at the moment. I think I’ll just stick with this for now and revisit for another trip. Anyone know fo the Allianz annual covers domestic and international?

I believe it does as many of the cruise people visit US ports, fly to get to their cruises, etc.

Are you saying you used Allianz for an entire year? If you don’t mind, will you let me know how much it was for a year? We are doing multiple out of country trips. Thanks

Geo Blue or whatever it’s called. I just got a quote. Your age comes into play, so my quote won’t matter. It was also for the top coverage. I need to do a deep dive this week to see what we really need. I am going to call Allianz this week and compare.

I know you asked another poster but I paid $280.00 to Allianz for a plan which covers an entire year. I believe that was the middle level offered. I am pretty sure the pricing is on their website.

Does anyone know if the annual policies with Allianz cover weather, such as hurricanes? I paid extra for the VRBO beach house trip, to get hurricane-type coverage. We used that benefit once when we needed to evacuate the Outer Banks (many, many years ago).

That’s very reasonable. Is that per person? It also depends on the purchasers’ ages and how much you choose for trip cancellation and Trip interruption coverage. I can’t find if their medical is primary or secondary. Anyone know?

That’s per person.
