Here in Michigan I’ve heard September referred to as local’s summer
September is my favorite month here.
Since we’ve been empty nesters, we usually travel in November. It’s a particularly difficult month here, weather wise, so I’m happy to get out of town. I’d like to add March to our schedule but that hasn’t worked out as well.
That time after Labor Day on the Jersey Shore is called “Local Summer” (apparently not unique to NJ!) Things are open, the weather is delightful, and most of the tourists are gone.
Before I moved to the beach, we rented for many years. We’d always negotiate to include the week of Labor Day. It was probably the most crowded week in the house, but not so in town or on the beach.
I’m sorry I’m about to be a little judgmental and maybe this is considered acceptable in some places, but we are currently having breakfast in the hotel breakfast area where the tables are placed tightly close together. This person has a cat in a carry sling and she is hand feeding it with food from her plate. DH and both are wondering if this is “normal”. The cat is eating and licking her fingers and she’s then dipping her fingers back into the food.
Disgusting, cats are not allowed in eating establishments by law in most places in the US. It would especially be a problem for me with my bad cat allergy.
They did open a cat cafe in Boston and have to keep the cats in a separate area away from where the food is actually sold (to meet safety standards).
As someone who travels frequently with a dog, I can say that hotel breakfast buffets do not allow dogs in the area where the food is put out but do allow them in the seating area as that is usually just an extension of the lobby. We usually bring our dog down to breakfast with us. We grab a seat as far out of the way as possible and take turns getting our food. She lies at our feet while we eat. We do not feed her buffet food.
Those of you who travel internationally - do you bring little gifts for the flight attendants? And if so, what? I haven’t done it but wondered if it would be a nice gesture on our long haul flight. I know it’s often recommended to give. Starbucks gift cards, but not sure if that’s useful in other countries as much. I was thinking something Valentines Day themed since we’re flying just before.
We fly out of ORD, so grab a box of Vosges chocolates (there is an outpost in ORD) or, if we have time to pick up chocolates before the flight - we usually grab a box from Chocolat Uzma.
I always try to make sure it is a box of chocolates that long haul flight attendants (often non American) would appreciate so try to go for small batch brands rather than mass producers.
