Well , shoot! We are on the waitlist for the yoga retreat in Peru! And that’s just the people who the advance email went out to!
Fingers crossed…

If you get there, try chirimoya. It is my absolute favorite fruit. It is like a custard. I have found it in Mexico and maybe Colombia and also NY (Dean & Deluca’s had it) but it does not seem to thrive when shipped to the US.
It’s pretty far away. I bet the waitlist opens up as people realize they can’t make it.
Don’t shelve the safari idea, maybe wait awhile. Several weeks ago we cancelled our trip to Kenya and Tanzania, since Ebola is spreading and could be a risk. Doesn’t seem like a great idea right now, but if you go on a reputable organized tour, I’ll bet you would be very safe and have an unbelievable time.
I have put it to the back burner to simmer some more. Definitely not shelving it!
Getting ready for a trip to the UK with another European trip later in the fall. I sent a “MyChart” note to my internist and asked whether I should have a new covid shot before the first trip.
He said to keep to my covid and flu shots in the fall, and noted I’d had an MMR recently — and I’ve also had a TDAP (or DTAP?) when my grandson was born.
The NEW recommendation is for a once-in-adulthood POLIO booster for travel to the UK, Spain, Germany and other countries.
Who knew?
Thank you for posting that. I need to look into the polio booster as I have a trip to Europe planned for this fall.
We had to get that polio booster before our Africa trip in 2011. It wasn’t required in a lot of places, but in Africa, polio has not been extinguished. We went to an international immunization clinic which had this for us when we arrived for our visit (they knew where we were traveling).
Interesting - my Medicare sent me for a spring Covid booster in addition to the one I will take in October. My husband is still on employee healthcare and they will only pay for fall Covid.
I also had a spring Covid booster and will have the new one in the fall. Had one last fall also. Lots of baby and young grandchildren and travel in my life in the next few weeks.
Does anyone have a spouse who is not a complainer but complains a lot about travel?
My H is a pretty laid back person
But travel is a different story. Planned a cruise, it was too long. Tried to plan a golf vacation. Why go to a different area of the country when we have great courses in our location? Tried to plan a golf trip where we stay one night in a hotel. Why would we do that, hotels are awful?
Go out to visit the kids. Only wants to stay one, maybe 2 days. Kids get bored of us. They live 800 miles away! We flew, it took as long as driving. Driving is easier.
Plan a trip where we rent an Airbnb with the kid. He wants to know what there is to do. He hates sitting on the couch.
Meanwhile he sits on our couch plenty.
I know he doesn’t like travel. I don’t know how to spend all that money for me. I have gone to see the kids without him but then he feels bad about not seeing them.
I guess I’m just complaining. This year the plan was to renovate the house. Except we can’t get it scheduled. H only wants to use a particular person who keeps putting us off.
I told him that I read that one reason for gray divorce was that one person wanted to stay home and the other wanted experiences. He then griped that I knew he didn’t want to go away on a long trip.
I have a feeling others (me?) could join you in having this situation!
If he HAD to plan a vacation- it was somehow a must - what/where do you think he would plan for?
My Christmas present in 2019 was a cruise around the Hawaiian islands. It didn’t happen the following winter because of COVID. Now my husband claims I said I don’t want to do it…which is not true.
There are two cruises I’ve proposed, and even given him the literature about them both are mid winter to warmer climates in early 2027, with availability. He claims there are no available cruises during that time period.
Earlier this year, we went on a trip which he was happy to do…because others invited us to join them. He agrees it was a fabulous time. So do I.
So…I guess what it takes here is for someone beside me to invite us to go on a vacation someplace.
Either that, or I’m going to do what @Marilyn has done and look for some tours to places I want to go…and just go.
DH is very happy to go to the Jersey Shore every September. And he will go to New Hampshire or Maine too…it’s the nicer longer vacations that are a challenge.
Easy. He would stay home, day travel to golf courses within 2 hours from home.
He would not plan anywhere else.
When I said I wanted to stay in a hotel and golf, that was for my birthday. He told me no one likes to stay in hotels.
If a gun was at his head, I guess he would rent an Airbnb at sleeping bear dunes. An hour and a half from our house. He would default to coming home.
I have a neighbor who hates to travel. He will spend one week at a condo that he owns, an hour from his house. He’s been known to come home to mow the grass and get away from the beachside condo he owns ![]()
Has he always not liked traveling?
My husband loves to say we live in such a beautiful place why do we need to go anywhere. Unless the trip is a sailing trip he complains. He will go if I plan it and admits afterwards that he has had fun. If you ask him he has no bucket list aside from sailing.
I have a good friend whose spouse decided he didn’t want to travel anymore. She isn’t happy but has found a couple of other friends who are happy to go with her. She isn’t thrilled and ends up traveling less than she wants.
My husband will not go on a cruise. ‘Cause… norovirus. He will happily travel to various places and stay in hotels. Just not on a cruise ship.
We never had much money to travel before. Raising kids and paying for college didn’t have a ton of disposable income.
We spent most of our vacations visiting family. No one family member lived close to another. Also my bil’s family owned a cottage at sleeping bear dunes which was nice for family gatherings but he had to sell it when they got divorced during the pandemic.
H really dislikes the beach. No beach vacations. Our D got married in the Caribbean, not his thing.
I think he just likes being home with his stuff.
My H likes being home with his stuff. He was a good sport and came on the trip to Scandinavia because my best friend from when I was 12 planned it & H is a friend of her and her H—it was for the 4 of us. S helped plan with hotels & business class flights all the way. We stayed with S and DIL at beginning and a few nights in Tokyo at end. He’s been having health challenges and had to go to ER 2 days before one trip in March & also ER in NYC on Mother’s day, the night before we flew to Scandinavia.
He’s been having health challenges and kept thinking they’d derail travel. Fortunately, we had warned our friends that we may want to do fewer things than them & sometimes just meet for meals and we were all ok with that. It worked very well.
Prior to this year, H has been a pretty good sport about travel but is just as happy to stay home. He will come & keep me company and mostly has a pretty good time & doesn’t complain.
Nothing wrong with not wanting to travel. My late husband would travel but did not enjoy it as much as I did. It also became difficult the last few years when his back issues made it hard for him to walk without pain.
I took several trips without him. S and I went to Sweden and Germany together. I went on a yoga retreat in Mexico with my sister. A girls weekend to Newport RI with my daughter. Multiple trips to NYC ( which I love).
We did enjoy some travel together and I’m glad we did. But if you really want to go, I say go solo or find someone else to travel with and just do it.
I totally agree with @FallGirl. If he doesn’t want to travel, find a way to do it anyways. By yourself, on an all woman’s trip, with a friend, with family. Do not let his dislike for travel stop you. If he feels guilty about not going or not seeing the kids, that’s not your problem. Maybe he’ll decide to do the trip next time.
I’ve gotten my husband to go on a number of trips by planning something I knew he would enjoy, though he said that he didn’t want to do much traveling. Then I told him I was going to do it by myself or with the kids…with his reaction being, “What, don’t you want me to go? I want to go.” Of course I wanted him to go, I just thought he didn’t, and until it was staring at him in the face, he didn’t want to do it. But he doesn’t completely resist traveling, just hates being away from Seattle in the summer.
