Genetics & the current MCAT

My son will be taking the MCAT sometime in 2013, possibly in Jan or in April. He has never taken a genetics course and as I understand it, he isn’t required to take Genetics by most medical schools as of 2012. I does plan to take Genetics, but not until his senior year. How much does he need to know about Genetics for the MCAT?

Yes, the AAMC does have a list of topics that are covered in the test, https://www.aamc.org/students/download/85566/data/bstopics.pdf</a> but even if he knows these particular topics, will he be at a huge disadvantage for not having had Genetics?

Has he taken any of the practice test or diagnostics? (I plan on doing one today) This will be a good indicator of where he stands and where he needs to focus his attention.

All the genetics you need to know for the mcat should be taught in introductory bio. I never took a genetics course in college. The review books have all the genetics you need to know.

Agreed, it’s ap bio stuff: Punnett squares, dominance, co-dominance, recessive, autosomal vs x linked.
