Assuming the rest of an application is solid/excellent/strong/whatever…do you think a 680 math SAT is a problem for Yale (for a normal public school caucasian girl w/ no “hooK”)?

So…if that’s the only obvious weak point…what do you think? Thinking about applying EA…but not sure. It seems like all you CCers have 2300+ sat scores!

Lol…sorry, didn’t want to post a “chances” thread…those weird me out.

Its not a weak point. Its just not a strong point. Remember, focus on your strengths. A flawless application without any flair won’t catch the adcom’s attention.

go to collegeboard.com and look at the college profile of Yale. There they list the middle range of SAT scores of admitted applicants. Looks like 25% of admitted applicants have scores in math lower than 710.

If you only took the SAT once, spend a little time this summer with the Blue Book and you’ll easily boost your math scores. The material isn’t difficult, it’s just getting used to the test.

I had a 650 math score on the SAT I, and I didn’t take a math SAT II and I don’t have scores yet for the AP. So basically, all Yale knew about my math skills was my SAT score, and I still got accepted for 2010! Don’t stress it.

Cool…were you a national award-winning _______, or one of those humanitarian types who goes to Somalia to build huts (you know what I mean, lol), legacy, minority…anything like that? B/c otherwise, that sounds like reason enough not to stress on it ;)

I have a 620 in math, but an 800 CR and a 780 W. I’m planning on retaking it, but if I don’t get a higher score, is this a huge glaring problem with my application?

As far as other stats, I’m 2nd in my class and have a 3.9 gpa (UW).

hmm, in this case, i don’t know what the Blue Book is. but in regular Yale jargon the Blue Book is Yale’s Programs of Study. blue books are also the packets exams are taken in.

I think they are referring to the College Board’s Big Blue Book for SAT review. If you do a search on this site you should find other threads on it.

Elgguj ~ I’m in a national honor society for being in the top 10% of my class, but that’s about it for national recognition. I haven’t discovered the cure for AIDS or anything like that. I have just been really involved in my school and other ECs (like ice hockey and karate, which are a little “different” for a girl). I would say that do your best on the SATs, but focus more on your essays and ECs, because that’s really what makes you stand out.
