Ok, so I just took the Princeton Review SAT practice test for fun and I ended up getting 800 on the writing section (untimed, however). The thing is, I’m only in 8th grade. I showed this to my parents and they plan on signing me up for the real SAT. I’m fairly confident I could score almost this high even when I’m being timed.

I have absolutely no idea what programs are out there for me. I’ve always considered reading and writing my strongest subjects, but I had no idea I could score an 800. So … does anyone know of any gifted or selective summer programs or something along those lines for someone with my qualifications to participate in? I’m interested in the types of programs that would look good on my future college applications.

“I’m interested in the types of programs that would look good on my future college applications.”

GET THIS IDEA OUT OF YOUR HEAD NOW. Nothing you do before ninth grade counts on your application anyway, and you will just wind up burning out by junior year when it really matters (trust me, you might think “I work hard I won’t burn out”), but this actually did happen to me as well as ALL of my genius friends.

That being said, if you are interested in writing, you should absoluetly pursue this interest and summer programs would be fun for you. But don’t worry about programs that will look good on a college application, you can start thinking that way in high school. For now, choose an area you are passionate about and start thinking about ways to pursue it (as you are). You might be interesed in CTY (center for talented youth). This program can get pricey however and the actual classes are mediocre (the social life and the people you meet are awesome though!).

Congrats on your score, by the way! With the new verbal-oriented SAT, you’ll probably shine. (but there is no need to start preparing now)

How about you do what you’re passionate about and get very involved with it, rather than just doing whatever you think makes you look good to colleges.

Do the talent search with whatever region you are in and go from there, except you might have missed the grade deadline to do most. I know CTD Northwestern has a talent search for 9th graders to take ACT. From the talent search there is a lot to go, like distant courses and summer programs.
