***GEORGETOWN CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD***

@KimQuat .67 postage means you are accepted! I had a blue paper in mine and I was accepted

@ANormalSeniorGuy and others: I’m not sure a lot of people really understand what the competition is like for these top spots at the very top schools. I think that is partly because it is hard to grasp just how many students there are across the country and around the world in competition for the available spots. For starters, there are approximately 4,000,000 students your age who are or should be graduating from high school this year. The top 1% of those equals 40,000 students. A 34 on the ACT and top 10% of your class may, optimistically, put you in the top 2% of students in the US, which makes you one of 80,000. That’s excellent and something to be proud of, but it is those 80,000 you are in competition with.

Top schools are, by-and-large, fairly small schools. The top 20 schools on the US News National University list (Georgetown is at #20) seem to have about 35,000 slots available for freshmen every year. That means that if the top 1% of American students wanted to go to those schools, they wouldn’t all fit in. But the truth is that there actually isn’t that much room. 25-30% of those slots will go to international students. There’s no problem with that, but their numbers aren’t counted in the 40,000 top 1% stat. Additionally, some students will come in as recruited sports players. Most will likely be academically talented, but their academic stats may well slip below the 1% threshold. Additionally there will be legacy students who drop below that threshold as well. Finally, there will be recruited underrepresented students, whether by ethnicity or first generation college students. Taken all together, the foreign students and students with a “hook” probably account for half or more of the available spots in those schools, leaving only about 17,500 spots for students whose primary “hook” is that they are academically talented.

I know that there are many other factors involved, and that the total calculation is more complicated than that, but it isn’t less complicated. The point is that if you don’t get accepted to one of these schools, don’t be surprised. There are very few spots available and they are extremely difficult to get. The best plan is to always have other options that you could actually be happy with.

What time are they emailing the decisions to international students?

Waitlisted SFS: 1530 (800CR/730M); 790 Math 2, 790 World History, 730 Bio E

103.5 W GPA (~4.5), dual enrollement degree, Valedictorian standing
NJ, mid-size public, no hooks

On the waitlist info page it said that 17% of those on the SFS waitlist were admitted in 2015, but none last year. Is there any reasoning behind this huge difference other than simple yearly variance?

son accepted had his mom look at the mail, had letter saw $.067 postage. She opened and started crying.

I got in! Wailtlisted at Oberlin which is like a 30% acceptance rate, but accepted to Georgetown with 7%? Bizzare…I’m going to wait before I celebrate just in case it is a mistake lol!

@collegemomjam - thanks. As parent I think there has to be a better way this process is a brutal start to independence for our young adults. It will difficult for him to process these rejections (John’s Hopkins also) as anything other than a negation of all the hard work he has put in. Ivy day will be brutal - if this is a precursor.

received an email from GT. rejected lol

Rejected international, didn’t have 3 subject tests though so was kinda expecting it :frowning: not a good start to IvyWeek
