I’m sure everyone’s tired and stressed out working on their apps (unless you’re an EA applicant like me! :):):)), so I thought maybe we can have a little break and fool around answering a random question. Yay.

I’ve just come across an interesting question (albeit random and useless): why is Georgetown not in AAU? GTown is a fine institution, and reading down the list of the AAU institutions (not that it’s any good/bad to be included/excluded from the list), it was strange to find Georgetown absent from the list. I was curious to see if anyone knows the reason(s) why.

Feel free to weigh in, or even add questions.

Caveat-this is my opinion only. It relates, in my view, to the historic anti-Catholic bigotry (up until the late 1960s this also manifested itself in such things as the exclusion of Catholic colleges from having Phi Beta Kappa chapters and effectively not allowing Catholic college graduates to compete for the Rhodes scholarship) of the American educational establishment. Notre Dame and Boston College have not historically been members either and Catholic U. was a part of the organization for years as a token. Thankfully, these days are behind us and today Georgetown is probably as much as a part of the elite educational estalblishment as any other top university in America. Today, for instance, Georgetown grads are the Presidents of MIT and Barnard.

ND, BC and GTown are definitenely better than some schools on that list…and they’re catholic. Interesting huh.

I didn’t think the question was going to be answered this quickly AND soundly. (I know you said it’s only your opinion, but the reasoning behind it seems pretty convincing :))
