I wonder if those two were cooking up independent study chemistry projects in their Andover dorm, too. Yikes.

I know what hoya hoya saxa is . . .“what the hell’s a hoya?” is a a cheer rival schools chant when Georgetown slips up.

Andover, Reed, Georgetown, Richmond…

It’s good to know that all the hoops students are required to jump through to earn admission insure that only the best and brightest are chosen to attend these prestige schools (let’s not water down the gene pool with an average kid). It would be interesting to know what these kids’ letters of recommendation said about them, now that the whole world knows “the rest of the story”.

^newly update article in the Georgetown newspaper–The Hoya

from the article in the link:

“Smith and Perrones lawyers waived their clients right to a preliminary and a pre-detention hearing. Judge Deborah Robinson, the presiding judge at the hearing, ordered that Smith and Perrone be placed into the custody of their parents in Andover, Mass. until their next D.C. court date on Jan. 24.”

“Smith and Perrone face federal charges of conspiracy to manufacture and possession with intent to distribute Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) after officials discovered an alleged drug lab early Saturday morning in Harbin 229, Smiths dorm room.”

“John Romano (COL 14), Smiths roommate, was also arrested on Saturday but was released and relieved of all charges at a Monday hearing at U.S. District Court. According to The Washington Post, Smith informed officials that Romano was not involved in any illegal activity after they both had been taken into custody.”

I think it’s perfectly feasible that a teacher or other person who “didn’t know the whole story” might have written good recommendations, etc. There are plenty of things you don’t know about others until, well, you know. As adults, we all know of someone who we never dreamed beat his spouse, or had a drinking problem, or had a mistress on the side and were taken aback by finding that out.

pizzagirl - I agree with you about people keeping certain aspects of their characters hidden - but these kids are obviously not new to the drug manufacturing game. My guess is that if you spoke with kids who knew them at Andover - there would be some stories to tell. The question is whether there were adults who knew things - or heard things - and chose to ignore the rumors? This is simply the first time they got caught - I’m assuming that to be the case. But I’ll bet that there are those in the Andover community who are not the last bit surprised.

Just in case you want to see their high school yearbook photos - pretty cleancut and preppy looking.

^^^^if you read the above article it begs the question…who exactly is going to hire you when you have an electronic monitoring bracelet around your ankle and what school is going to enroll them after what they are accused of?

I wonder why their yearbook photos are published and not their mug shots.

Any bets that one or both of these students will be on CC in the future asking how he can overcome a “minor infraction that wasn’t his fault” and get admitted to a good school?

^^lol…and we will all be helpful.

Just to clarify - The students graduated from Andover Public High School, so they did not live in dorms. Andover is a wealthy suburb north of Boston.
