Georgetown Transfer Questions

Bump please I am very very curious

I am in the same situation as you, Joapuck. I got into American University a few weeks ago but have decided to forego the deposit until I hear back from Vanderbilt, GWU, and Gtown. I called AU and the transfer coordinator told me the 4 weeks is just a tentative deadline. They understand that applicants are waiting to hear from other schools and you will not lose your spot at AU should you deposit a little later.

i want to transfer to georgetown probably during sophomore~junior year in college.
I am a student at Virginia tech… here are my stats::

HS GPA- 3.95
SAT: 1890
College GPA-4.0

How many credits would I need to transfer to the business school at Georgetown as well as the College?

There is not a “rigid” course requirement to transfer into their business school. If possible, I would take business classes that more or less related to those needed for a degree from McDonough.

I’m not sure about their college.

Hey all,

Just thought I’d throw some help in here. I successfully transferred to gtown a few years ago (I’m now in law school). If you all need any pointers, I’d love to provide them. I don’t think the process has much changed, though I do think that competition is now insanely high. Everyone wants to transfer to their dream school nowadays!

Idhaka,

You’re doing really well! Congrats!

Your academic record is very competitive. Keep that up! Make sure you take rigorous courses and get great grades in them. Stay involved in your campus community. It’s really convincing to an admissions committee that you’ve exhausted all your resources, such that you really know you belong somewhere else (and who knows, you might indeed end up liking your current school).

Focus on the essays. I think GTown applicants in general tend to underestimate the essay, and that’s terribly unfortunate, as it does break many strong applications. I think it’s particularly easy to mess up GTown’s app, because many people confuse the attractiveness of the school with the attractiveness of its location. People don’t want to read about why you want to be in DC; they want to read about why you want to be in Georgetown. Even if you want to be in Georgetown because it’s in DC, you need to provide concrete reasons as to why your needs cannot be met at, say, GW or Howard or American or Catholic. Many, many applicants fail to do this.

The best essays, in my opinion, convey a concrete goal and show how Georgetown is a necessity toward it. In my essay, I wrote that I wanted to do x,y,z and that Gtown has a,b,c programs and k,l,m profs and 1,2,3 students who can make this happen unlike any other school.

For the other essay, be creative. I think many applicants do try to be creative, but the essays come across as contrived. Admissions officers can sense ******** a mile away. Keep it real, be yourself. If you’re afraid that the admissions committee won’t like you if you’re yourself, then screw 'em! Maybe that’s a sign that Georgetown just isn’t a good fit for you.

If you’re afraid admissions committees at any school won’t like you if you’re yourself, then you should probably engage in a little introspection and change your ways very quickly before you become academically extinct.

chance me for fall 10 please

Coin-toss. Write a good essay. Explain why you got the bad grades.

(Hint: Don’t blame them on someone else; good idea is to own up to your own mistakes).

Are you eligible to apply if you have more than 4 semesters worth of credit? By the time I’ll apply I’ll probably have between 70-75 credits. Their website doesn’t mention anything, but I just want to make sure. Many schools automatically disqualify you if you’ve obtained more than 4 semesters worth of credit.

Try it out.

I got into gtown with the *tiest of *ty HS GPAs (below 2.5), and a high GPA from a fourth tier school (3.9) as a sophomore. My case is definitely not the rule, but it should inspire you to put your best foot forward for benefits that will last a lifetime.

Congrats! Just out of curiousity, what were your Sat/ACT scores? How did you make yourself stand out? What were your “hooks”?

Hmm… I had a 1280 from high school, but I retook during college and got a 1490.

My “hook” was that I knew exactly what i wanted from gtown, and i wrote an essay demonstrating that. Admissions liked it, apparently.

Do you think I should retake the SAT? I got a 1440/2400. :(

Probably a good idea, but only if you know you can score significantly better.

My score was 1480/1600.

Bump for anyone who needs help:)

what was your major when you transfered? and was it from a cc?

Majors were english and political science. I applied for philosophy (and that was one of my reasons for applying – my school didn’t have a philosophy program).

I didn’t apply from a CC, but might as well have. My school was unranked.
