Alright, I am another paranoid transfer student. I ordered a stack of literature from Amazon.com providing information regards to my application to Georgetown and I feel semi-confident, however, a personal opinion would really lift a great deal off myself. I am already working on my essays which aren’t due till March, so I am certainly serious about this.

I guess I could include some supplamental information…I do know exactly what I want to do with my life. I will be applying to the college, majoring in History and Arabic and I plan on (hope to) work towards a Phd in Arabic Studies. Of which GU offers one of the best programs anywhere. Ensign’s office offered to write me a supp. letter of reference, along with my poly sci professor (whom is also a judge). I have seen a good deal of the Western World and all 50 states (I don’t know why I am mentioning that but I’ve noticed a good many other folks do, so I’d thought I’d throw it in there). Anyways, I’ve probably about put you to sleep. Please email me if you think I could provide you with any further information to provide a more accurate response. I really appriciate your time!

Thanks!!! ( :

I’m wondering what I need to bring my SAT/ACTs up to, whether I should take my SAT2s, and how they will act towards my financial situation.
Thanks

@ Michaelungerrr

it would really depend on which school you apply to within Georgetown. GWU’s Elliott School is certainly well-regarded in international affairs, but I think Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service has a bigger name. From what I’ve heard, GWU is known for training diplomats while School of Foreign Service trains lawyers, businesspeople, and government workers

with those in mind, Georgetown is alot tougher to get into AND they are really big on test scores (i.e. SATs) so it’s good that you’ll be retaking those. but i think you definitely have a much better shot at GWU for now

Michaelunger:
While test scores are certainly important, good grades in a broad, rigorous curriculum would also help. It’s good that you’re taking the opportunity to improve your SAT scores, though.

You’re chances with solid SAT scores and good essays: Decent.
Without the SAT scores: You have a shot.

45daysinrome:

You have a good shot, provided you write good essays. Does your CC have a pre-arranged relationship with Georgetown? It seems like you go to one in MD, so it’s likely. I’d check that out with your dean, because it would really help if they do.

@flowerhead, Thanks so much. And I will check that out.

I’m transferring from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, and I’m currently a sophomore. My high school GPA wasn’t great, but I’ve been doing very well at Trinity. My stats are:

HS GPA: 3.3/4.0
SAT: 1420/2150
Various EC’s

College GPA: 3.89/4.0
Double Major in Economics and Political Science w/ a focus in IR
Essay published in The First Year Papers (1 of 9 published out of 550 first years)
Vice President/Treasurer of Model UN
Vice President of the Outdoors Club
Manager at the Campus Movie Theater

Also, my advisor/international relations teacher is a Georgetown alum and has offered to write a recommendation for me.

What are my chances, and is there anything else I should do to prepare? Thanks for your help!

Drob

1) What’s your courseload like? Is it broad and rigorous? How many hours are you taking?
2) Make sure your recommendations are good; I wouldn’t shy from submitting more than one.
3) Do you know what you want from Georgetown? Write good essays that express your specific need for the school (and be really specific; I wouldn’t want to see needs that could easily be satisfied by other outstanding academic institutions in the area, such as GWU, Catholic, American, etc.).
4) I think you have a decent shot. Your application to the college would be strong. SFS, probably weaker, though I have no experience with the SFS.

1) Including this semester, I’ve taken 14 credits (the requirement is an average of 4.5 credits per) worth of courses over 3 semesters. I’ve taken a few random courses, but for the more the most part I’ve taken the most difficult courses possible. If you take two random non-major courses in American Studies and Sociology, my GPA is a straight 4.0.

2) I expect my recommendation to be very good, as my adviser is a very gung-ho Georgetown grad, and he was very excited that I was interested in transferring to his Alma Mater.

3) I know exactly what I want from Georgetown. It was one of my top choices out of high school as I fell in love immediately with GU’s combination of a beautiful campus within DC and a world class academic and intellectual climate. I was unfortunately denied on my first attempt, but I have succeeded in improving both my GPA and my extra-curriculars pretty significantly from what they were in high school.

4) Thanks!

Hi Flower,

Your transfer story gave me some hope so I decided to post here. I currently attend a CC with a prospective 3.72 by the end of Fall semester (good chance since I have straight A’s in my 4 classes atm) I have already written my essays for GU, which outline my history, including a theme of overcoming a great adversity, a health issue. I will be transferring as a junior to SFS with an Associates Degree.

Stats:
First Generation American (Hispanic)

GPA: currently 3.65
Course load: 10 credits (Honors seminar accounts for 1 credit). Overall, 40 credits since beginning CC.
EC: (I am still working on this) I recently received a great internship at an Attorney’s office in town.
Accomplishments: Honors Student, Phi Theta Kappa, Who’s Who’s Student.
Recommendations are expected to be excellent, I have a U.S. History teacher as a mentor.
Occupations: I have worked since I was 11 at my family’s restaurant.

I guess what I am asking is what can make me shine in terms of ec’s to the admission’s committee? What do you suggest? I began the year riding on an upward trend grade-wise, but I recognize that GU expects something more from its Transfers. BTW my SAT scores are completely not applicable even though it hasn’t been 5 years. I was still unwell at the time. Should I send a letter explaining the test scores?

Thank you in advance,

-Kari

Btw: I assisted concert choir in hs. (If that’s any improvement for my weak resume)

I am also fluent in Spanish and plan to indicate this on the application. Unfortunately I haven’t much of an involvement in the community currently… of which I would like to strengthen in the coming months before the admissions deadline. BTW: What is the maximum recommendations to send in?

-Yohana Flores

any volunteers chancing me?

My story is an exception to the rule, of which I believe the admission officers might believe worthy to gain acceptance… but of course I am stressed by all of this. In my case of overcoming adversity, I’ve read on this DB that ec’s might not apply, although who knows.

Kari:

I’d be happy to help, but a little later. I must study for my exams.

=) no problem!

Happy studying!

I am looking to transfer to Georgetown and need some suggestions…

I currently have a 3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science. I am applying for a Government major at Georgetown. I also have internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia. I am a researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests. I am also the head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB. I was also a part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation. There are plenty of other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 30.

Also, I am looking to take my next two quarters off to go for a self-discovery experience. I am going to be in a Global Peace Corps program known as Buddhist Immersion. Here I will be teaching English to children and monks who wish to become multilingual lectures across the globe. I will also be attending many mediation retreats and living in the monastery.

Knowing all that is above, should I retake the SAT? Would one suggest to take two quarters off or continue my education like most students do? Also, what chance do you think I have of getting in to Georgetown?

- Since your hours are structured somewhat differently, I’d consider drafting an addendum that explains what a “normal courseload” at your school is, and then showing your progress in comparison.
- For explaining “Why Georgetown?,” the admissions committee already receives too many applications telling them that the campus is beautiful and that DC is great. That’s not too helpful and it really doesn’t distinguish you from your competition. A mature essay with solid reasons for wanting to attend the school outlines your goals (even if they are tentative), programs at Gtown that interest you, professors you’d want to work with, social initiatives, or core principles of the school’s philosophy.

kari
- Please do not include “Who’s Who” “honors” anywhere on your application or supplementary documents. Everyone “in the know” knows they’re a joke (and I don’t mean to demean your accomplishment).
- You’re not giving me enough information. What was your high school record like?
- If you are encouraged to submit test scores, and you don’t, you should have a good reason for not doing so; and you should state that reason in an addendum.
- If at all possible, and if you know you can do well, try to retake the SAT. Doing it again and doing well gives some objective credibility to your CC performance; it gives admissions officers some assurance that you can handle work in the SFS. It also shows initiative. You’re approaching your application as if all that’s been done has been done; but I think that approach is premature. Instead, start by asking yourself whether you’ve done everything you can do to put your best foot forward? Only when that answer is yes should you begin focusing on how you present your application.
- I would submit two recommendations, maybe a third from a professor who is on track to give you good grades in the spring. Recall that decisions are done in May.
- I’m not too familiar with the SFS, as I was a member of the College. The SFS is definitely tougher to get into, so I’m unsure what you’re chances are. If you were applying to the College, I’d say you have an okay shot. Since the SFS is more selective, I’d say it’s pretty slim.

athletics12
- I wouldn’t retake the SAT. Your grades so far are great from a great school, and the rest of your scores are great. Relax.
- Take the quarters off if you wish. I can’t really see the time off as detrimental.
- I think you have a pretty good shot. Good luck!

@flowerhead
Over the weekend I toured campus and got a bit more familar with the application process, the deadline is March 1 for transfers. Again how much will taking a few SATIIs help and I’ve recently learned that my Philosophy professor used to teach summer sessions at Georgetown. He said he would be more than welcome to write me a recommendation, will it make much of a difference?
