I’m already expecting the worst in term of FA. I’m an international so I’ll be lucky if I get anything at all.

@flowerhead

When you transferred, did you have any problems with getting credits approved? I will of course attend Georgetown regardless, but it would be nice if I don’t have to make up an extra semester. I was well on my way to completing two majors here so I am hoping that at least a good chunk of my credits will transfer over.

No problem at all. In fact, I was able to shift some credits around to fulfill some core requirements. It’s not really a computerized process. You just meet with your dean, submit some course descriptions, and they’ll review it. They’re super helpful and receptive to helping you do what you want.

Cool. Thanks!

It’s worth stressing that Georgetown is really a neat place because of that. Faculty and administrators at the school treat you like an adult. A lot of my professors, for example just told me to hand in papers “whenever,” or if I had a specific deadline, but a reason for why I couldn’t make it, they’d be receptive to extending it. This was unheard of at my old school. The emphasis at Georgetown is on learning, not on being an authoritarian and pedantic. Similarly, the deans and admins are there to help you make sure you’re on the path to success, but also want to provide you with significant flexibility so you can cultivate your academic interests. It really is just such a nurturing environment. Enjoy it as much as you can:)

In the end I thought McGill was too underfunded and disorganized (and kind of dirty… no offense). What really pushed me away was the state of the library. It just seemed like such an oppressive place to be, and you’re right, there are some parts of Montreal that are a little less than favorable. "

According to your earlier post from last year, you were REJECTED by McGill Arts. You didn’t reject McGill, McGill rejected you. Arts is one of the easier faculties to get into.

haha. McGill library is awesome (if you know where to go). Especially the Islamic and Law Library.

I’m currently a second year undergraduate student at McGill University, majoring in “Anatomy & Cell Biology” and minoring in “Management.”

I recently got accepted to Georgetown’s School of Nursing and Health Studies (NHS) as a transfer student.

I first accepted admission to McGill University on account of my early curiosity for biomedical science, but the schools hasty make up your mind and stick to it mentality demands students be uncannily aware of what they want to pursue in life. Although McGill provides the depth for students who have already discovered love for a single subject, it proved difficult for me, as a student wishing to probe multiple disciplines to satisfy multiple academic needs.

On that note, I thought Georgetown would be a better fit for me because the School of Health Studies is much smaller than McGill’s Faculty of Science so the classes will be more interactive; and, Georgetown promotes a more liberal curriculum that will allow me to explore different disciplines like philosophy and health care management.

Although I’m a pre-med student, I am also thinking about getting a PhD if Med School rejects me (admissions to Med Schools in the States and Canada is really competitive for international students so… I’m Japanese). According to some Professors at McGill’s science departments, McGill’s pre-professional curriculum is great if I’m really seriously about getting a PhD.

Does anyone know more that NHS? I’m still debating if I should go…
I’m also waiting for decision letters from Brown and UPenn.

I know some stuff about NHS, but since I wasn’t in the program, it’s relatively limited information.

if you don’t mind, what are your stats?

i have a feeling the adcom decided Georgetown wasn’t big enough for two McGill transfers.

Decisions are never made on that basis, at least as far as applicants from McGill are concerned.

Hi hookedongtown.
I went to an international high school in Tokyo
HS GPA: 3.68

Extra curricular activities: not so much…

Current Uni: McGill University (second year) Faculty of Science
CGPA: 3.78
Extra Curricular Activties:
- Summer Research Internship at University to Tokyo
- Research Internship at McGill University, Faculty of Dentistry. Currently working on online publication with a Dentistry Professor
- Exec Member of Japanese Student Association
- Hospital Student Volunteer

Work Experience:
- McDonalds for four years
- Summer School Counselor

oh I hope admissions to Georgetown is not based on that… if they are, I’d question the school’s academic philosophy

hookedongtown, I know you will be tempted to compare your stats to McGill’s, but NHS’s admissions philosophy is slightly… different.

Flower - you touched upon your financial aid a few posts up. What do you think of the financial aid at Georgetown? Is it grant or loan heavy? I’ve heard tons of conflicting reports, and am worried that i’d be getting tons of loans. Another top school has given me something like %80 grants, and i’m uneasy that Georgetowns offer won’t come close.

I honestly don’t know how it’s determined. I will say that Georgetown isn’t averse to giving a ton of grants; I just don’t know how it works out. The only way to find out is when you get the package from them.

yes I realize that NHS employs a different (some say less selective? is that true?) admissions approach from the one that the College uses. I also understand that stats aren’t everything, so it could’ve been anything that impressed them.

i still haven’t heard anything from admissions so i am still kinda hopeful that something will come about…

I’m hoping you’re right hooked! I’m really trying to be positive about that.
If that’s any help, last year people got their acceptance later in May, so I guess as long as you didn’t get rejected you’re good, right?!

@ tomofboston

Why the hostility? I was rejected from Arts, but was admitted to Education (which is significantly easier to get into than Arts) to study foreign language teaching (which used to be my intended career path).

And I’m not sure where you heard Arts was the easiest faculty to gain admission to. You should check your facts. On that note, I graduated from an extremely competitive public high school with a senior class of over 2,000. 34 of those graduating seniors applied to McGill, many of whom who considered McGill a back-up to Ivy Plus schools, so the process was competitive to say the least.

You don’t know me, so don’t make assumptions. I’ll grant you the same courtesy.

let’s make this thread 100 pages.
