Georgia Tech class of 2024 waitlist thread

My son told me that his friends aren’t off either.

I signed on to check this thread hoping to see that everyone on the wait list had received an invitation. Our son has committed to GT but I am not too excited about paying the $30k + out of state tuition for online classes if it comes to that. Was hoping to work with the admissions department for a reduction if the campus is closed for the fall semester.

Congratulations! looks like most people will commit this year to GT. We are still waiting, we are in-state that means very slim chance as most of the classes will be online fall and kids might not need housing and all.

My daughter got off of the waitlist, but with the idea of paying OOS tuition for ONLINE school, we have an alternative plan. She got presidential scholarship to a state school, so she decided that she will take online classes for free through this school, then do her master’s at another school (like Georgia Tech). They are saying corona is going to strike again in the fall (especially in Atlanta since it is a hotspot), and I want to do the responsible thing and keep my child close to home in case I need to bring her home for an emergency. Lots of her friends are doing the same thing, having online classes for free or less than 30k, then transferring to or getting a master’s degree from an out of state school.

She got off today??

Last week.

Do your refer to HOPE scholarship, Miller etc. or hope to get to GaTech? I do not think that you need to make financial decision now. You can speak with GSU financial advisers how FAFSA works with different Georgia scholarships. They should know for sure. I suspect payments for classes are not due till some time end of July if not August. Usually FAFSA loans are not bad if you need them. I did not dig in since we do not plan to take one now. I believe they are either interest free, or low interest until graduation. If you do not need them, do not take them. However, do not take any loans outside of FAFSA for sure unless you absolutely have no money for college. I would advice not to live on campus if money are tight. Those loans add up very quickly and have usually high percentage rate, so you will set up your son for huge financial burden.

It looks that legacy helps with OOS waitlist (yield protection, they want to take off list at this point only students that will 100% commit), but not for in-state.
School needs money…
However, if your child is legacy, he has almost guaranteed transfer with good GPA next year. It is really good option. GaTech admits ton of legacy second year. Most GaTech legacy students are transfer students. In fact, legacy program specifically was designed to allow to continue multi-generation legacy that was always important for GaTech.

Yeah. Spoke with my coworker yesterday and I am very clear. Dropping FAFSA or not dropping doesn’t matter. School will get its money anyhow. Either from Federal loan or from my bank.

Thanks

Anyone got off of the waitlist, today?
Anyone got summer admission?
and last question is anyone you know dropped GT :from their school lists?

Nothing here. We are OOS. Today being May 1, we are rejecting (or not accepting) U Michigan and UIUC. Purdue has extended until June 1, so we have a little more time to hope for GT. Eng major, National Merit Finalist, 35 ACT, Valedictorian, many awards in filmmaking, volunteering for years - sigh. I’m happy for the offers, but I know he feels like he is ‘settling’ for anything less than GT. (Deferred then Waitlisted)

OMG
I hope your dropping of UMICH and UIUC help my son, wait listed on both ( OOS) and GT (IN-State) similar Stats CS major , not Val or merit finalist but Eagle Scout etc , also differed and again wait listed. I am more nervous than him. It is already 3.30 and I think they will not send any emails out today.

My DS will be declining UMich (Computer Science). Cannot afford their high cost.
Keeping the fingers crossed for GT

Waiting on GT , UMich and UCLA as waitlisted on all three.?

SAT 1530
GPA 4.0
OOS
Valedictorian
National commended
? Basketball player JV

We committed too. I had hard time to pay dorm deposit yesterday. I hope that they will refund dorm and food money in case of coronavirus in fall. Since we are legacy and BME is such a good top ranked program, we gave up local in-state even with Presidential. Coronavirus will not stay for 3-4 years.

I believe GT would reimburse housing and meal if going online. My son, a GT freshman, got reimbursement on that 2 items as this semester was cut short. If you are in state, commit to GT BME is no-brainer. Even if you are OOS, GT’s tuition and cost is relatively low compared to other schools.

I see GT usually in the top 15 of the most expensive schools for out of state tuition. It was a tough decision not to go with UT Austin with the in state tuition or other schools that offered scholarships but the S really wants to go to GT.

My son is OOS. Last year some decent local private school offered full scholarship but he turned down. Honestly I think GT OOS tuition is really reasonable and living expense is not high at all. He is a STEM guy and really enjoys GT.

Totally understand your situation as UT is also such a great school. I guess kids just get bored staying local and would like to explore.

I am not complaining (too much) about the cost. GT is a great school and I am happy to be able to do this for him. He will coming in with around 32 AP credits so that will help some.
