Waitlisted student here. It seems the first wave for OOS may have just begun/ happened starting Tuesday. Did anyone hear back for Math yet? I’m a domestic student in high school abroad so idk what category I fall into (intl or OOS). How many of you guys came off?

If you are a US citizen, you will be considered out of state, regardless of where you attend high school. Good luck!
does this mean that this year they will not be taking so many off the list? how many are on the waitlist this year btw? is it 7,000?

I think it’s probably around 7000. At least I think that’s what it was last year. The year before it was closer to 5000. The chance of getting off the waitlist is much much lower than getting in during the regular admission cycle.
If you go on the Georgia Tech website, you can look at the fact book and it will tell you exactly how many people were taken off every year. Sometimes it is as little 20. Others it’s more like 200. But still most years it’s less than one percent chance. In 2020 it was around 1000 people. This was because of Covid. Almost no internationals could come so that was 400 people right there. Then others did not want to go so far from home, and gap years were widely granted. So disregard that year entirely because it is not predictive.
Here’s a compilation. Last year they took off a bunch. The two years prior it was one percent or less. As you can see it varies widely.
Based on waitlist movement seems like this year waitlist movement is more in-state than out of state. This all has to do with yield.

thanks a lot for the insight. I just saw on FB that someone got off waitlist for chem E. but not clear if it was OOS or In state… and they were given 2 days to respond. It seems correct that the offers are made on a tuesday.

I just saw something on the Georgia Tech parents page of someone whose child just got off for FYSA. No mention of whether in state or out of state or major. Sounds like they are likely filling up the first year abroad programs. If it is like other years, it may mean that Atlanta is now full.

Thread on Reddit today indicating some on the waitlist received emails from Georgia Tech stating the class is full. I believe one was CS and the other EE

Is today the day anyone hears of GT waitlist? It seems like it’s been at least 2 weeks since there has been any movement….. We got the email asking if you would still like to be on the waitlist.

There are some tiktoks and instagram posts saying GT closed waitlist. No email received here. But it does not seem that that anyone is getting off the waitlist– so it is probably true.

Agree. Freshman dorm selection has been going on since last week and is close to finishing.

Waitlist finally closed yesterday, July 8th, and I did not end up coming off, however I was offered talent initiative pathway (to major in mathematics and computing). Does anyone have any experience with this pathway. I’m not currently committed to any college in the states, I’m committed to one in London, so I would have to do community college to get my credits. I would like to hear other people’s experience with the transfer pathway, thanks.
My daughter was offered a transfer Pathway Wednesday while she was in orientation for the Honors program at UMD College Park. It was really awkward. I understand there have been webinars detailing the transfer process and past applicants have reported GT is very strict about the requirements. A 3.5 GPA is an absolute requirement. When the waitlist closes, Georgia Tech typically offers transfer pathways to some students. One of my children was in this boat. If you think this may be a possibility, my advice is to register for classes to satisfy the very strict transfer requirements - check the transfer equivalency table to be sure classes transfer, register for enough hours that you will have 30 hours completed in the spring, etc. then forget about it and do everything you would do to assimilate at your current school with the idea that you will be there for four years. Don’t go into it thinking you’re going to transfer - give where you end up the best shot you can to be the right place.
My kid ended up not transferring, but he wasn’t sure what he was going to do so wanted to lay the groundwork in case.
Georgia Tech does have a lot of transfer students, but it is also much more difficult to assimilate. A friend‘s daughter took this route and while she finally got herself settled the first semester was really hard and she thought she had made a mistake. A friend son transferred and never really found his place/couldn’t wait to get out. I said this not to discourage you, but to realize it does come with some challenges. A lot of people have already settled into their friend groups which makes it more challenging, and it is definitely a lot easier for some rather than others
My kids have loved Georgia Tech and it is a great school, but you can absolutely have the same opportunities coming from the University of Maryland, which is also an excellent school.
We looked at it as a great thing to have in our back pocket but one month into his studies at UGA, he announced he was not transferring
. Ended up with a great degree and a great job so it all worked out.

We are OOS to GT and my son is entering his sophomore year. I graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park and while I enjoyed my time there and it’s a good school, I would somewhat disagree. The opportunities my DS has already had while at GT have been amazing. We live in the Midwest and my DS received an internship here this summer. A big factor in him getting the internship is he was told they were very impressed with Georgia Tech on his resume. I just think the more national reputation of GT is something to consider. So, anecdotal I know, but just my experience. A few of his friends with at GT are from Maryland and passed on some very nice scholarship money at UMD to commit to GT with no scholarships and are also doing quite well with internships.
