This is the Class of 2030 waitlist thread for Georgia Tech. Good luck all
Anyone else get offered the Verto education study abroad thing?! Thoughts?!
Yes… i think it was sent to most candidates OOS on the waitlist…. (not international students).
There have been at least two groups offered admission off of the Georgia Tech waitlist. From what I can tell and what I’ve heard seems to be in state students. One happened yesterday, Tuesday, May 5. And one was several weeks ago in early to mid April.
I just saw mentioned on Reddit that they had the information section yesterday May 5 and they announced that it was already full. This Information session was with the Verto company and Georgia Tech admissions officers to answer questions about the program.
Vanderbilt also offered this program this year for the first time and it filled up immediately as well.
It makes sense for these more selective schools. It will count as a transfer student the following year. A way to control their transfer applications/admits as well. It will make it harder for transfers from other schools to these schools to be admitted as they will pull from successful candidates from Verto that have already shown a strong commitment to attend GT in the future.
You are more optimistic about it than I am. I think it’s roughly $70,000 when you take in account tuition, plane tickets, and the recommended $500 to $700 a month. Classes offered are very limited. Looks like they have no math past calculus two which many Georgia Tech students place out of. Only offer biology and chemistry for science, which does not give credit for some/most engineering majors. If you’re in the unfortunate event of having to take calculus over there, which is required if you do not place out, I would have concerns about moving on to linear algebra or multi variable at GT. The classes are offered through the university of New Haven. There are a whole lot of schools that offer transfer for this program so it attracts a wide level of student - from the highest to not so strong. Plus sending a bunch of 18-year-olds over to Europe, where the drinking age is 18 for their first experience not living under their parents roof is setting some of these kids up for failure. The first year semester abroad with Georgia Tech is very heavily chaperoned with Georgia Tech faculty and is a much different situation.
Also most of the classes offered are going to transfer as some sort of elective which may or may not satisfy a core requirement. It does look like a guaranteed transfer as a sophomore, but I would think being able to graduate in four years would be very difficult as you don’t really make any progress towards your degree during your first year.
Vanderbilt does require a 3.5 GPA but does not appear to have any curriculum requirements so curious if any of it actually transfers for something other than elective credit. On the other hand, Georgia Tech requires a 3.3 GPA plus you have to take calculus one and two, English, and two sequential lab sciences, if you do not satisfy those through AP credit.
Not sure how Vanderbilt decided this, but Georgia Tech seemed to offer only waitlisted students, and only apparently out of state students. Perhaps because they are close to their cap for out of state students? Or maybe they think that an out-of-state student is more likely to do it since in-state students get free tuition. By being wait listed Georgia Tech has determined that these students are academically qualified, so perhaps the deficiencies in any classes will not be material because they’ll figure it out.
Vanderbilt alumni are pretty irritated about it, casting it as a pay to play situation for kids who did not make the cut. It will be interesting to see how this works out.
I’m guessing the GPA of 3.3 for GT is due the fact the student at Verto needs to take more stringent courses in Calc 1 and 2 and two lab sciences where that does not appear to be the case with Vanderbilt where there are not such tough course requirements. I would agree does not seem an ideal way to start at Georgia Tech. Things just seem tougher at tech academically. My DS found that out this year as a Freshman. He did very well but it was definitely an adjustment for a kid who never had less than an A ever through school prior to college.
I think the 3.3 GPA requirements just aligns with the multitude of other transfer pathways granted to students at Georgia Tech. Many of those pathways go to in-state students as they are things like Atlanta public schools, first generation, conditional transfer, which goes to children of alumni or employees, etc.. Those pathways also require certain classes to be taken and a 3.3 GPA. At Georgia Tech the credit is noted, but the GPA is not included - it’s just the minimum requirement to satisfy transfer. Perhaps not, but my guess is it is more challenging to transfer through these traditional pathways as you are at a regular four year college vs taking classes through a company which are sponsored by the University of New Haven.
Does anyone know if the Verto option is replacing the GT 1st semester abroad option?
It is not. That is something that is run by Georgia Tech. The people that are in the first year semester abroad are Georgia Tech students. The people that sign up for the Verto are not.
I agree the classes offered by Verto do not make sense for a lot of students who would be heading to Georgia Tech. It would definitely eat up a lot of the electives..
any insights on chances for OOS WL movement for Ga Tech? Also, do they do it by school? major? would it be by engineering, or by mechanical, chemical etc?
Someone posted this link from another site. Seems like it tracks waitlist movement from social media/reddit etc. Is the waitlist moving?
I think it’s theoretically by major but with the understanding you can switch immediately so I’m not sure it’s a hard and fast thing. Definitely by school though. Also gender, in state/out of state, both play a part. They’re basically just trying to hit the 60% in state 30% out of state 10% international goal plus get as close to 50/50 male female as they can.
there’s such little information on the Georgia Tech waitlist movement….. perhaps there wont be as much movement as last year…
There has been a fair amount of movement in state. I’m wondering if out of state is full? Haven’t heard of any movement and giving the pathway to out of state only might suggest that. Wait list just varies so much year to year.
in 2023 they only took 20 people. And everyone they took was required to do first year semester abroad.
That is the interesting thing to me, as I am not hearing anything about people being placed in first year semester abroad, which has typically been filled with the waitlist.
even so, they’ll probably keep the waitlist open until the end of July. I think the percentage chances of getting off the waitlist at Georgia Tech are like 1 or 2%. We were in this situation with one of my kids and we found it best just to get excited about their committed school, find a roommate, sign up for a dorm, do all the things. Being in a holding pattern is brutal.
Was anyone offered study abroad EA/RD this year. I’m still thinking Verto took over that option?!
Verto is totally separate. First year semester abroad programs are going on as planned and are totally different. If you do first year semester abroad, you are actually a Georgia Tech student. You go to Georgia Tech in the summer for three weeks. You then go abroad on a supervised abroad program with Georgia Tech faculty. I haven’t heard of anybody getting offered that option so it is possible they filled up with accepted students who just opted in.
i saw one or two people get into FYSA from the facebook page from the waitlist. I am not sure if they were instate or OOS.
