Georgia Tech Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Ah sorry that happened to you.. don’t worry it’s just a deposit!

Are you able to load the meal plans page?

Yes I’m able to. Unfortunately don’t think it means anything

Good luck all

Oh, absolutely agree – all of GT is honors! My D26 is 95% interested because you get a single room in an apartment freshman year and only have to share a bathroom with one other person. And 5% interested in the small cohort that has some activities. That’s really it. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I don’t think the honors program at Georgia Tech has preferred registration. There are honors designated classes. I don’t know whether those are limited to honor students or not. But to my knowledge, it is not easier to get classes if you are in the honors program.

The biggest issue with honors program at Georgia Tech is a people drop out because of the requirement to take a certain number of honors classes and the inability to fit those classes in their schedule. It is much more valuable to graduate with a GPA of “highest honors” which is a 3.55 or higher than to be in the honors program. Employers do not care at all. Students in the honors program are not “smarter” or “more accomplished” than people not in the honors program.

There are benefits to the honors program, such as a sense of community and fostering friendships, but the biggest attraction for some is that they will get an apartment with a single room. There are pros and cons to that as well. Eighth Street apartments are kind of out of the way honestly. There are fewer freshmen in that area, and apartment living can be less “social”.

I do think there has been a big uptick in honors applications since they moved to the apartment style dorms. That is a big draw for many.

It looks like they’ve changed their curriculum starting this fall for the honors program – we’re still learning about it, but yes, the single room is definitely the biggest (and possibly the only) draw for my daughter, lol. That alone would be worth it for her to be near the quiet part of campus out of the way – especially since from what I can tell, it’s near where the marching band rehearses?

The new requirements include four things –

  1. Take two honors-designated classes (for a total of six credits)
  2. Do three semesters of immersive learning (internship, study abroad, research)
  3. Take a foundational course (my kid would take Leaders in Progress and Service for the Creative Industries, which is already a requirement for her major)
  4. Participate in a Summit, in which you present a project before a student-led panel

I’m guessing that many students drop out after a year or two, although a lot of this seems like things students would do anyway (except maybe the Summit).

Can anyone access/not access any of the links and what are the messages you get?

You can have her apply to Explore LLC or Ignite LLC or what have you…. check those out too… get most of the same benefit (suite like single room in some cases) and lots of activities like Donuts with the Dean or $1 to a Falcons/Hawks/Braves/Aquariam kind of stuff (I’m spitballing here but pretty close to reality).

With two kiddos there… biggest benefit of Honors is smaller classes and earlier registration… but even that isn’t such a huge deal b/c most come in with a lot of AP/IB credits so they kind of can take their time when it comes to scheduling… cannot get the CS or Chem class you want… meh, no sweat b/c they’re already up +30 credits!

Yes, there are certain classes designed with an “H” that only Honors kids can apply for… and say the highest rated PHYS professor just so happens to teach that “H” section that has 26 max seats. So maybe not preferred registration, but call it what one wants… must be in the Honors Program to get that section…. sure could take the normal PHYS and pray get a decent prof too. But anywho, I’ve seen this with my own eyes when the kiddos register.

YES. And, through it all… if a kiddo were to apply and get into HONORS PROGRAM … if my kiddo I’d encourage them to do it.

Sure, end of the day the diploma and GPA and employer may not care … BUT it presents students with opportunities should they take advantage of them all the better.

Or like my DS there, the big thing is not having late Friday afternoon classes. Work hard play hard. Too much to do on weekends at Tech! He’s not doing honors but so far he has been able to achieve this goal

I get access denied for the first and a long message that basically says the same thing for the second one… what about you?

Same thing for me. Anyone else see anything different?

Some honors colleges do give preferred registration. UGA does. They register for classes before non-honors college students (right after athletes). This can make a big difference as they get a much earlier time ticket. Being able to register for an honors class instead of a large lecture class doesn’t seem that helpful if the honors class only has 26 seats - particularly for a class like physics that almost everyone has to take. I definitely don’t think class registration is a reason to be in the honors college at GT (while at UGA getting that earlier time ticket makes a big difference). I think all GT students can also register for most honors classes. One of my kids ended up in an honors section because that is what worked with his schedule. He was not in honors.

I don’t think my current Junior has had a Friday class for at least the last 2 semesters. Priorities.

Official date for EA2 is Jan 30. Good luck to all. That will be a busy day for most engineering students as Illinois, UMich, Ga Tech EA all are on same date.

I am sure he will be admitted RD or after that (from waitlist.) Not everyone admitted enrolls. His big win are GaTech classes with As. It is just way too competitive.

It appears by the stats GT admissions publishes, the number of applications this cycle have surpassed even last cycle’s record number of applications. Last cycle EA2 was just over an 8% acceptance rate. I’m guessing it will be about the same this EA2 cycle.

I agree. To me GaTech is all Honor college. I am not sure when Honors appear in GaTech. I think Honors were created under pressure from other schools. GaTech is quite different from many public schools. It is not official flagship (UGA is) for the state, so it does what it wants in terms of selecting students - it follows state requirements in terms of percentage instate vs out of state, and then it just chooses whom it consider fit and balance it the way administration likes. That usually means currently- do not accept students who will not be able to handle classes (no matter what ), try to get GA students from all Georgia counties (not just top students from Atlanta), bring as many girls as possible for Engineering school etc. As far as I know students do not care who is in Honors who is not. Most do not care do they live in LLC or not (some prefer East campus and other West.) LLC if i remember correctly costs more. Registration maybe not easy but departments do help students from their majors to get required classes.
