Georgia Tech Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Salaries are pretty good. But keep in mind the response rate for these kind of surveys are usually low (~ 33%).

Agree, response rate rates are often low as many who do not have jobs don’t respond. And those that have the best/highest paying jobs tend to respond at a higher rate.

I do like how you can filter for major and degree level. It’s a good way to evaluate a job offer for sure.

Agree. Often there are headlines like the one below (under paywall). It is hard to know the real situation with entry level jobs.

We live in metro Atlanta, and my son was deferred from Georgia Tech for EA1. He has a 4.5 GPA and 1570 SAT. He took 2 dual enrollment classes at Tech in the fall and earned A’s in both. He is applying to ChemE which we know is hard to get in to. He is ready to submit his deferment form but stumped on one question: Would you be willing to study abroad first semester? He marked yes for being willing to start in the summer, and while he would love to go abroad at some point, he does not want to start college that way. He is excited to experience all that Tech has to offer in the fall-running club and football games. Will it hurt his chances of being admitted if he selects No for starting abroad?

It might decrease his chances if he does not check it. Georgia Tech opened up first year semester abroad to expand the number of entering freshman. He needs to ask himself if this is the only way he would be able to start at Georgia Tech as a freshman would he take it? If he would rather go somewhere else than start abroad, then don’t check the box. For some number of kids this is the only way they get to enter as freshman. They are placed in the first year semester abroad and if they want to be a Georgia Tech freshman, they have to take it.

We know several people who were admitted to semester abroad. To be honest, I don’t think any of them were particularly happy about it, but Georgia Tech was their dream so they did it. It ended up being a good experience, and the best news is in three short months they were on campus living as freshman.

Several years ago, only 20% of deferred students were ultimately admitted. Not sure what the percentage is now. But if it were my child, and Georgia Tech was his first choice, I would encourage him to be open to all possibilities to make it happen. The other option is to start somewhere else and transfer in, but then you’ve lost not just three months on campus but a year or two.

Is there an estimated EA2 decision release date? When have they announced in previous years?

Usually the last week in January. I’m guessing it will be around that period again, especially since it appears they’ve received even more applications than last year. As it gets closer they will send an email out with the exact date and time for the release..

Fingers crossed for your DS and family. No good answer. But, check the boxes if feel its his school of choice regardless. In the grand scheme of things… its a few months only.

Does anyone know how quickly you have to jump on an honors program invitation if you applied by the EA honors deadline?

I’m looking at this timeline –

My D26 has a few acceptances, is waiting on a couple more, and is truly waffling on which school to choose. But she loves the idea of the honors program at Tech and already applied for it. They’re supposed to extend the first round of offers on March 12. On March 16, we have a visit booked at another school she’s really interested in.

I know to accept the honors invite, you have to put down a deposit ($250) and apply for housing ($80). But then I think you also have to pay the first semester of the honors fee, which is $400.

$730 is too much to put down in non-refundable funds to secure a spot, and I don’t know if that’s okay to do, in any case.

But does anyone know if waiting a week to accept an honors program spot is okay – or will it be gone? I know the RD round honors invites don’t go out until April 6, so there will be spots left – but I don’t know if they split them evenly between the rounds or something.

Am I overthinking this? (I just know that if my kid lands at Tech, that single room in an apartment will make a world of difference to her mental health.)

For such a specific question, I would recommend calling the school. I’m sure they would be able to shed insight on your situation.

Kind of overthinking… but that’s okay!!! I’d suggest… at this point… if memory serves the Honors Program notes don’t come out for a bit… only vacillate over this if (and when) getting the offer. Lastly, having two sons at GT, the number one advantage is getting the classes you want when you want … but if a strong student being in normal sized classes one will do just fine no matter what!

Side note: what’s super interesting to me and my two sons…. absolutely everyone at GT is very smart from a high school perspective and SAT perspective… but oddly enough the recipe to success remains the same once in the door: butt-in-seat and studying basically non stop. Regardless of honors program or other LLC, all will work out in the end.

My guess is that she should be fine. In the honors progam FAQ, the wording suggests to me that many kids wait until the last minute to accept, since they are warning against waiting until after May 1:

If you delay accepting your invitation, there is a chance that the John H. Martinson Honors Program may fill (i.e., all of the spots in our residence hall are taken). This is especially true if you wait until after the Georgia Tech admissions deposit deadline of May 1.

Agreed. I would add having my DS at GT currently, all the kids are super bright with high scores etc. and I think there is less a focus on such things as Honor Programs as opposed to say other schools. I know they have it and I’m sure there may be benefits to some, just don’t think it’s a huge deal there as other places. That’s just my vibe on it.

Anybody applying to Georgia Tech? Haven’t seen much portal astrology for that this year.

I am – I don’t think there’s much known portal astrology methods for Georgia Tech. One interesting thing I was able to do was see meal plans and my meal count for this year (which is 0). Everyone probably has access to it, though.

Could you send a picture of what you see on the conversation for Georgia Tech?

On OSCAR, go to Meal Plans

Guys, don’t click ā€œpurchaseā€ on any of the plans. It said that I’ll get an email confirmation and that the charge cannot be undone.
