Georgia Tech Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Is there a thread for discussions on Georgia Tech Early Action 1 decisions that came out on 12/5/25 for class of 2030? I tried but can’t seem to find it

@Surviving-HS, this would be that thread. Feel free to post your thoughts/questions here.

We are in state for GT and my son was deferred during early action1. He applied to the school of computing as a CS major (school of computing is the only school at Tech that requires the applicant to declare a major at the time of application). His stats are listed below.

My questions are especially for those applicants who were deferred in the past (mainly 2024 admission cycle but any is ok) during Early Action (not necessarily CS major but that is preferable) and accepted during regular decision. He will submit the Deferred Supplemental Form (DSF) by early January.

Questions:

  1. What, in your opinion, are his chances of getting in?

  2. What can he do to improve his chances?

  3. What are your tips for completing the DSF besides the obvious ‘what have you done in the time between applying to GT and now” ?

  4. Does checking ‘yes’ for Insight/FYSA increase chances of admission? We really don’t want that and will only do it if it helps his chances.

Stats:

SAT: 1580 composite (Math: 780; Reading and Writing: 800)

PSAT: Perfect score hence NMSF

Unweighted GPA: 4.0

Weighted GPA: 4.55

Class Rank: 45 out of 652 at a highly competitive school

Percentile: 93.1% (top 7% of class)

# of APs: 16 with all As and 5s in 14 AP exams (did not take exam for 2 AP classes). All APs are high rigor classes.

Dual Enrollments: 4 with all As

Relevant Coursework: AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, Georgia Tech Computer Science, Georgia Tech Linear Algebra this semester and Multivariable Calculus next semester , AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C: Mechanics, Engineering Applications. Many other high rigor AP classes (total of 16)

Interned at Georgia Tech summer 2025

Current Internship in the IT dept of a Supply Chain company.

ECs:

Leadership position in FBLA and TSA. 1st place at nationals in FBLA and 3rd and 7th place at TSA nationals.

Over 100 volunteer hours.

Wow - those are amazing stats. I don’t have any advice but this whole process is so crazy.

My DS was deferred and then accepted. He was deferred by Northwestern, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech and later admitted to all three. He is currently a freshman in engineering at Gtech. So, don’t lose hope. I think he still has a good chance of acceptance in RD. If he has received any new school awards after he submitted his application make sure that is indicated in his DSF.

I have a kid who was deferred, waitlisted, and then offered a transfer pathway. When he filled out the deferral form (HS class of 2021 - so test optional year)) it said historically that roughly 20 percent of deferred kids are ultimately accepted. As I’m sure you know, CS is the most competitive major at Georgia Tech. One of the results is that they require you to apply directly into that major, and strictly limit transfers into that major. They may even be prohibited - not sure. This all changed a couple of years ago. This is just a function of high demand and limited resources of classrooms, professors, etc.

Georgia Tech does not consider demonstrated interest. You can make an addition to your file by thoughtfully filling out the deferral form, adding anything impactful, like new leadership positions, new awards, and fall grades. When my son was deferred, they made it clear that they did not consider anything outside that deferral form so be sure you included it all.

Also, this is a time to reevaluate where you have applied to be sure you have an acceptance for CS where your kid would like to go. It is all really a crapshoot at this point. They’ve said he’s qualified to be in the class by the deferral and it comes down to whether they will have room.

As far as opting in for summer start, six years ago it seemed to make a difference in acceptance from deferral. Not sure if that’s true any longer because the cat is out of the bag. My youngest, who is now a third year, was accepted EA for fall admit and on May 1 which is the last day to do it he opted to start in the summer for ignite. It’s an awesome program. He did it because my oldest GT kid said everybody he knows that did it loved it. It’s only about five weeks long. Starts the end of June and ends July 31. Pretty much everybody ends up with all A’s. You only take seven hours. It’s sort of a soft launch into college with easier grading, smaller classes, easier to meet people, etc.. plus it will give you an additional seven hours when you register for your spring classes, which can be helpful. FYSA is a much bigger commitment I think the question you need to ask is if you had to start in the summer or do FYSA to go to Georgia Tech and that was the only way you could start your freshman year at Georgia Tech would you do it? Just checking the box doesn’t mean that you are automatically going to be chosen for that, but it may be your only way in. My youngest checked the box for summer start and was given fall admission. Absolutely do not check the box if you don’t want to do it because you will not be able to switch to fall if you’re admitted for summer

Best of luck!

No answers, but just wanted to acknowledge how incredibly frustrating this must be – because I can’t imagine better stats than what your kid has. Good grief. Fingers crossed for him in the next round.

The only thing I can suggest is since he looks nearly perfect on paper and is quite clearly an amazingly qualified student, is there anything he can submit on the DSF that is a little unusual or quirky or funny or gives a little glimpse into the why behind all these stellar accomplishments? Was he driven to succeed for a particular reason that he hasn’t shared? How does he use his talents to speak to GT’s motto of progress and service?

I’m just brainstorming – I’m thinking a kid like this needs something to help him stand out from all the other top-tier applicants to GT.

This is not really that weird, but my D26 designed and constructed a prom dress out of duct tape for a Duck-brand scholarship contest, and she modeled the dress for a photo shoot. And then she wrote an essay about her inspiration and construction choices – something about a woodland fairy vibe, with the entire skirt being made to look like flower petals that spun out when she twirled. (Which is hard to do with duct tape!)

Of course, she was applying for an artsy major and not CS, but you see what I mean.

First of all, what amazing stats! What I’ve learned in this “game” of admissions is it’s truly a game . There is no doubt your DS is intelligent and motivated.

Part of me wonders if it’s his class rank and how many peers / classmates applied. If they took 20 others ranked higher from his school in EA it may just be a numbers game.

DS did not apply and DD admitted so I have not seen the deferral continued Interest form. I would echo @SpreadsheetMom and focus on his why- who he is outside the classroom and how GT will allow him to make an impact in the future. Who is the person behind these amazing stats?

As for summer, if GT is truly his #1 then he needs to do what he can to attend - summer start or even FYSA. I hear only great things about Ignite. DD checked that box and still was admitted in the fall.

Good Luck!

If I remember correctly, the deferral form has a small word limit like 150 words and they ask you to use bullet points so difficult to be creative in that framework! But I love the idea!

Georgia Tech, while expanding the class by hundreds of students in the last five years, still only enrolls 2400 Georgia freshmen. Unlike UGA, they do put emphasis on demographics like gender and first generation students. They also have to serve the entire state and do focus on doing that so getting in from a competitive Atlanta high school is very difficult. The graphic I saw said 15% of the EA admitted students were first generation, 15% were from rural counties, and 14% are from a Title 1 school. Also, the acceptance rate for females is one and a half times the acceptance rate for males. So all of those factors play a part, particularly when you are a male from metro Atlanta.

He could write it in haiku.

KIDDING, but my D26 once submitted an English assignment about how stupid haiku was…written in a series of haiku. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Alas, it was 8th grade English class, not a college application.

Sorry @Surviving-HS – if I come up with any legit ideas, I’ll share them!

Are you in state for GA?

Thank you so much! That is a wealth of information. You have given me a lot of food for thought

oh WOW! what your daughter did sounds amazing! I made notes and will definitely share them with my son. Thanks so much!

One more thing to consider about summer since you have a son. Fraternity rush for some of the fraternities actually starts in the spring and goes through the summer with formal rush being when the semester starts. There will be events all summer from trivia nights, to parties, to tubing, Braves games, Top Golf, etc., hosted by various fraternities. Although my youngest had a brother in a fraternity he wanted to check a lot of other places out before formal rush. We don’t live in Atlanta so this was part of the reason he decided to start in the summer.

Fraternities at Georgia Tech are very different than fraternities other places. They are full of engineers and computer science majors. Greek life GPA is higher than average non-Greek GPA. My kids were strongly encouraged to become more involved on campus and did because of their fraternity affiliation. Both of them ended up with internships at companies where multiple other of their fraternity brothers interned. Academic support for those who need it. Something to consider. If nothing else it’s a great way to meet a bunch of people.

Sounds perfect and so much fun

I can second this. My DS is a freshman and pledged this fall. I would strongly encourage involvement in Greek life at GT. It’s been really an awesome experience for my DS especially with him being from far away OOS. He’s made so many friends.
