I was just looking at the Admissions Snapshot that was linked above, and it only gives total numbers for the last six years – and the most recent cycle is not included. It also doesn’t break it out by cycle.
It does give enrollment for 1st, 2nd year, etc. students by state – so one could maybe glean how many students were admitted in 2024 etc. assuming X yield? But I’m not really a stats person, so someone else might have better luck with this than I, lol.
That admission snapshot is super helpful for Georgia students as it has a breakdown for every high school public and private in Georgia. How many people applied. GPA and grades on application. How many accepted /enrolled. And also the average GPA of the enrolled students at Georgia Tech from that high school. Interestingly, if you compare the admission stats for individual states not Georgia and the competitive Atlanta area high schools, the admission stats for the in-state kids are actually higher in many instances. Georgia Tech is a very tough admit in state particularly from Metro Atlanta. It is also self selecting as it is a unique place that is definitely not the right one for every strong student. I looked at that comparison a couple years ago with I believe Alpharetta high school, (not where my kids go just a big Atlanta area high school that popped up first alphabetically) and either New York or New Jersey and the Alpharetta high school stats were higher - as was the Georgia Tech GPA. Of course, if you have a smaller number of enrolled students and someone tanking the GPA that skews the result.
The admission snapshot is a five year spread though, and as Georgia Tech has become more competitive over the last five years, I think it undershoots the metrics a little both in state and out of state.
Georgia Tech really doesn’t release detailed stats upon admission anymore. They used to several years ago down to average GPA and average SAT, etc.. with a similar social media graphic like UGA does but that stopped during the COVID years.
UGA is also twice the size of Georgia Tech although Georgia Tech is rapidly trying to close that gap (without meaningfully expanding facilities, which is becoming an issue). I think UGA has roughly 2500 more entering freshman - and in 2019 when my oldest entered, I think the freshman class at Georgia Tech was half the size of the freshman class at UGA. And Georgia Tech has a much higher instance of international students and international applications - and the brand name internationally of Georgia Tech is huge. So it’s really not an apples to apples comparison.
Yes, many schools have become more competitive, not just GA Tech… and in general, any stats over a spread of several years will underestimate selectivity. However, this tool is the only source of stats I’ve found for us OOS folks, so… better than nothing!
I know CC is focused on undergrad (where UGA does have more students than Tech) but when talking institutional strategic plans (mentioned somewhere above) you have to look at the entire university enrollment.
Tech has much larger enrollment than UGA and GSU when you count all students…all degree programs, all non-degree students, full-time, part-time, in-person, online.
I read somewhere that Tech is the fastest growing public uni, but not sure where I saw that.
Here’s spring 2025 enrollment for Georgia system:
I think it’s just a correction. Georgia Tech is consistent now in the size of their Freshman Class with other similarly situated Top Publics and populations. For instance, UNC - Chapel Hill has an undergraduate population of about 20,885 and Freshman class size is about 6,191. UVA has an undergrad population of about 26,685 and last freshman class was about 4,000. Georgia Tech undergraduate population is between 19,000 -20,000 with a freshman class last cycle about 4,000. So this is all consistent.
The Fall 2024 cohort includes 3,838 first-time, full-time students and 1,376 transfer students. These incoming students join a total of 51,433 degree-seeking individuals, 18,785of whom are undergraduates.
Does anybody have any info about the Conditional Transfer Pathway? Georgia Tech just changed the eligibility requirements. Before, it was pre-calc completion, rejected from Tech, and family member affiliated with Tech. Now instead of rejected from Tech, it’s: Have strong academic credentials (based on course selection and grades) within the first-year applicant pool. Does anyone know anything about this change? Is it supposed to target students with lower grades who have a family member at Tech and Tech doesn’t see them as ready, or is it just to cut down on how many students receive the offer?
I remember being on this thread last year. My daughter was in state and was deferred. She got in during the regular decision ME with a summer start date. Unweighted GPA 4.0 Weighted GPA was about 4.4. 1520 sat. Top 10% (around 8% I think) of a class of about 450ish she was in lots of honors society’s, did a project heading a group crocheting hats for cancer patients summer before high school year. Tech isn’t need blind so when we did the supplemental after deferment we mentioned access to her dad’s unused GI bill along with a couple academic awards. She also does art work and is adobe and illustrator certified. The deferral was hard for her. She also checked the box being willing to start in the summer. If deferred checking the summer or Europe on the supplemental increases the odds of acceptance. The summer program was great for her as a stepping stone to college and 100% made her fall much better. Mid terms and finals still stressful etc, but she is so glad she checked that summer box and started then and got a chance to get used to being a college student before fall semester started. And of course we don’t know if they would have accepted her if she had not checked the summer box….. so go ahead and check that summer box if deferred and you can go during the summer it was a great program.
D26 is accepted! OMGosh. I really thought it would be a deferral after she didn’t submit the optional portfolio AND neglected to see the optional “creative” essay, lol. Whoops.
She applied to the new BS in Arts, Entertainment and Creative Technologies that is actually launching next fall. She’s hoping to work in UX/UI and digital narrative/storytelling – basically the intersection of art and tech.
They gave her a fall start with the option to start in the summer if she would like. (She did not check that box, but we had second thoughts after reading some info here – maybe she should consider it if she chooses Tech.)
Stats – 99.19 weighted GPA, 1560 SAT, National Merit Semifinalist, lots of leadership and longevity in marching band, primarily music and theatre ECs. Her essay was pretty solid.
From the texts going around her class, so far we’ve counted 8 people who got in, 1 who was given a guaranteed transfer, and several that we haven’t heard about.
D26 admitted Aerospace Engineering with fall start . FWIW she checked the “summer is ok” box and was given a fall start date.
Stats: 4.0 UW/4.5 W, 35 ACT, IB diploma candidate, ranked top 2% in large Atlanta suburban high school. 4 year varsity sport, various school based service clubs, allstar cheer at a national level.
We know of 3 others in her class (female) admitted and waiting to hear from a few others.
Those numbers are really deceptive when it comes to Georgia Tech. They have tens of thousands of online graduate students. On campus undergraduate students hover around 19,000
Now that EA1 is over. It’s now on to the 57,000 (last cycle) plus OOS applications for Georgia Tech . It will be interesting to see just how big the OOS numbers are this cycle when they are reported.
