She looks like she will be a competitive applicant. Make sure to directly address both parts of Tech’s supplemental essay:

Georgia Tech Short-Answer Question (max 300 words): Why do you want to study your chosen major, and why do you want to study that major at Georgia Tech?

Yes, this essay is next in line for her. She usually takes lot of time/days before she tackles why us essay. She says she has to know in and out of the major and the university before she can write a good essay. Ofcourse she does this with every university she is applying to, which is taking quite a bit of her time but she enjoys the research part and knowing cool things about these universities
Do you know what perecentage of students they take in from out of state?

That’s great!

Class of 2028 OOS acceptance rate was 10% (including internationals), generally I think OOS students make up about 40% of undergrads, but that’s not always communicated.

@man9999 My daughter is applying for CS as well(out of state). Even for instate students CS is very competitive as you may already know. I am no expert but, I would suggest to focus on his rank and take an Advanced CS class through community college if he still has a chance to enroll in fall. Rank and an extra class may come in handy later if needed. And ofcourse most important thing at this point is his application. Make sure to detail out his activities well(with tangible results/numbers/percentages). I like how he has published products on google play store and his continuos interest/reserach in CS all through the years, make sure these comes out well in his resume. And the essays, particularly why essay seems like short answer at first glance but students would need some time to research on the university to write a good essay, so I would suggest him to plan his time accordingly.
He seems like a good fit for CS to me, best wishes to him!

With respect to the Georgia Tech essays, focus on their motto of progress and service in your essay. Not just the classes you want to take and the professors who want to study with, but how you will contribute to the culture at Georgia Tech. How are you getting involved? What clubs will you join? What leadership will you seek? What research opportunities will you take advantage of? Georgia Tech is full of kids that are not only very smart, but were very involved in high school, and continue that involvement on campus. If you listen to any of the admission Instagram stories, they will reiterate this. I think it’s an important aspect of the GT specific essays.

Georgia Tech out of state acceptance rate is around 10%, maybe slightly below.

Georgia Tech demographics (not acceptance rate) is 60% in state, 30% out of state and 10% international undergraduate.

There’s only one GT supplemental essay.

Why do you want to study your chosen major, and why do you want to study that major at Georgia Tech? (max 300 words)

Students have to directly address both parts of that question…why the major and why that major at Tech.

Pretty tall order to fit all that and why major in one essay with 300 words. No wonder these kids are super smart and write compact leet code later!

Incredible stats and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get accepted. Moreover, in-state acceptance is way higher than OOS. From last year’s overall EA acceptance, it was like 40+% for in-state and less than 10% for OOS if I remember correctly. CS is obviously more competitive everywhere so the acceptance rate will be lower but you get the point.

Just repeating what they say over and over on GT Admissions Instagram live sessions - address motto of progress and service. This is also outlined on their website where they talk about how to write the GT supplement. If anyone is applying their Instagram as well as the GT Admissions blog posts are very helpful.

“Demonstrate a student’s thoughtfulness about why Georgia Tech, specifically, is a fit for them and how their goals align with Georgia Tech’s Values. The Georgia Institute of Technology is a public research university established by the state of Georgia in Atlanta in 1885 and committed to developing leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition.”

This goes beyond why your major and why GT but is easy to include in that conversation. They have changed the lingo to improve the human condition but GT Admissions social media still talks about progress and service (old motto). Same thing essentially.

The issue people run into in state is GT is much more competitive in highly populated areas. We know people accepted REA at Ivy League schools and deferred at Georgia Tech in state. Their mandate is to serve the state and their in state enrolled freshman class is a little over 2000 kids (in a state with roughly 120,000 high school seniors).

The admit rate for the class last year in state was 33%. Where we live, only the very top of the class kids get in. https://admission.gatech.edu/images/pdf/2024-Ga-Tech-FY-Profile.pdf
