Instate and OOS students need to understand that part of problem is demographics and adjust their expectations.
For instate GaTech is trying to get students from every county in GA. So students with good stats from rural area have better chance than students from Atlanta or suburs. On top of it if your school is very competitive with many applicants, GaTech will limit # of students from each school.
Same with OOS students. GaTech wants students from every state, so if you apply from Alaska you have better chance than from VA simply because there would be less applicants from Alaska. Student with lower stats and weak application then may get a spot over another very competitive student from VA.
Georgia Tech is pretty transparent in sharing data about the admission process but keep in mind it is holistic admissions. That said you can see gpa/test scores for states/counties or even high schools here.

Any idea how they recalculate GPAs? Is it a formula similar to the one used by UGA? I see people from OOS posting weighted GPAs approaching 6 somehowā¦
They do not recalculate(if transcript has one) apparently as they do a more holistic review. There are more details and a video below under academic preparation.

For the reference⦠We have a friend, who was accepted from waitlist to CS from the very top magnet school in USA with GPA 4.0 unweighted with extremely advanced magnet classes and every possible and impossible extracurricularā¦
Student actually deposited to another school and got off the waitlist in the beginning of June. That is how competitive is OOS admission.
Didnāt realize it was that competitive. What do you think the chances would be for my DD - instate suburban high school, 33 ACT, 3.95 unweighted GPA, 11 APs? It seems like they have a higher admission rate for women.
It depends of major and your high school. I would ask your high school counselor. School should have previous year statistics.
Admission rate is definitely quite a bit higher for women. Where does she fall in her class? That is likely the determining factor - almost all admits are top 10 percent of class or higher, even in state. You can also look up the high school if in state and see admission statistics, including how many admitted from that high school and average GPA and test scores. The data is spread out over 5 years and GT has gotten much more competitive with many more applications so this is not a perfect science - you want to be above the stated values for the best chance. For example, Alpharetta High School average is 1515 SAT, 33 ACT, 13.2 AP and 4.2 GPA
Any idea how the Alpharetta average breaks down along gender/ethnicity lines? Say white girls compared to Asian males.
No clue. And any historic breakdown could now be different since race can no longer be considered.
Not even a guess? We have national statisticsā¦it would be good to have local ones.
I donāt have any specific knowledge about Alpharetta high school. I just pulled those stats because it was the first metro Atlanta suburb high school I saw. Historically, Georgia Tech is roughly 1/3 Asian and 1/3 white. MIT recently released their demographics for the entering class where race was not a factor and the Asian percentage went up quite a bit Who knows whether that will happen across the board, but the applicant pool of the two schools has a lot of cross over.
I donāt think her chance is slim. We are applying too with a lesser stat and international.
Very good reminder. Thank you.
I think her chances at GA Tech are great. Their admission rate for girls is twice that for boys, and she has outstanding credentials. Was wondering about the 5.8 Weighted GPA - is your high school adding 2 extra points for AP courses?
Not exactly sure but AP and any advanced courses are considered as weighted courses at her school.

She is right at the median for her school as far as tests and GPA. Economics major
I do not think that even admission person from GaTech can chance anybody. It all depends of the next year pool. GaTech used to not admit officialy by major. However, unofficially they always made sure that all students will not happen to be CS majors or IE majors or BME majors. But students were allowed to change majors in the past. Now CS is limitedā¦Who knows what will happen this yearā¦
OOS here, so i am not familiar. Always thought Georgia Tech is known for STEM and UGA is known for business. Is there a difference in Econ degree between the two schools or is it more location and fit that is different?
