I think location plays some role. Atlanta vs Athens. I know some people who went to GaTech for Psychology and Business.
I think the Econ major at Tech is more quantitative. Think Econometrics compared to an Economics B.A. The schools are very different culture - wise
Agree. It is like one is school of dorks . Another is more like partier vibe.
But I am not sure that dorky environment is necessary for studying Economics .
Just to understand. Students communicate in GaTech not via Instagram but via Discord about housing, events etc.
Wow, that makes Tech even a harder sell than I thought, lol
Harder sell to whom?
Dorks love it. Preppy girls barely exist there.
Also make sure that your DD is ready for GaTech environment. I never had issues, but I was used to being in majority male environment even in HS. As Math major I remember there were 2 girls and 11 boys often in upper Math classes. DD also came from magnet program and she always had male and female friends. Actually in DDās (BME) case it is vice versa. She was in shock to discover that 90% of BME students at tech are girls.
Can anyone chance me? Especially anyone knowledgeable regarding the conditional transfer pathway program.
Iām OOS applying for electrical engineering. My dad did his PhD and masterās at GT, but he hasnāt donated tons of money or anything. I wouldnāt consider myself as much more than a middle-of-the-pack applicant, so the best-case scenario Iām envisioning is getting offered conditional transfer off the waitlist.
GPA 3.97UW at a very competitive private school
1570 SAT
School is unique and caps you at 9 APs, but I maxed out my rigor including the important engineering classes.
jr year AP exams: 5s on physics c mechanics, calc BC, spanish language. 4 on APUSH
sr year: taking calc 3 + diff eq, physics c E&M, micro+macro, stats, lang
ECs include but are not limited to:
- short internship at a medtech startup
- a bunch of sports graphic design stuff like founding a club, running the official school athletics instagram, and a bunch of paid work
- varsity sports with leadership
- leadership in band
- a bit of volunteering
Correct me if Iām underestimating myself, but OOS is so competitive that Iām not even aiming for first year admission. How likely am I to be offered conditional transfer though? They stopped offering the pathway to every single denied legacy applicant a few years ago, but Iām wondering just how competitive it has gotten since then. Are most legacies offered the pathway as long as they could be conceivably considered for admission without legacy? And if I get deferred/waitlisted instead of rejected, is that promising in terms of a pathway offer? Thanks!
You need to ask admissions about it.
On your own you seem to be a competitive applicant, but as you know Tech is a reach for everyone. You should definitely go for it.
It appears you are eligible for the transfer pathway, but if you have questions you should contact admissions.

Best of luck!
As mentioned, Georgia Tech is a reach for everybody but you are a very competitive applicant. If you end up being waitlisted you have met the academic qualifications for admission, and almost certainly will be given a conditional transfer pathway. If you are rejected/not waitlisted, you would almost certainly then be given the conditional pathway offer. Historically, they give out 8000 or so conditional pathway offers so my thought is that is your worst case scenario. We know a kid that applied early, was rejected (not deferred) and got a conditional pathway offer and then got into MIT - to give you an idea of the level of randomness in admissions.
What is conditional pathway? Do many colleges have this? Thanks.

At GaTech it is a guaranteed transfer option (if conditions are met) offered to legacy and GT employeeās students who are not admitted. See the link above which includes the details.
Some other public universities have guaranteed transfer programs where students start at a community college or non-flagship then transfer to the four-year flagship university (if conditions are met). Most that Iām aware of are open to any in-state student, not limited to legacies like GaTech. Examples are UVA WISE (open to CAS waitlisted students) and UC TAG.
Wow. people posting here have amazing stats.
My son is 1520 SAT 780 M/740 V OOS applying to engineering from competitive magnet. GPA 3.98 UW/4.9 W. 14 APs including BC Cal as junior. Taking MV Plus Physics C this year. Volunteers for one organization and has leadership there.
Daughter will be submitting to Georgia tech this comming weekend(OOS). Wish they let student submit Resume.
If there are activities that donāt fit, or the character limit doesnāt allow for adequate explanation, your D can use the additional information to add more details.
They mentioned the additional info on common app can be used to enter community service(Daughter did use(250 words)this space to enter community service. They didnāt say to enter any other activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1q6YiTw054
Well, many students do use the additional info section to elaborate on activities, whether community service or not. (talking about generalities, not necessarily specific to Tech)
Your D certainly doesnāt have to, but itās important to know that many applicants do. Just sharing my experiences.
Yes, I have heard many resources online says about this, just not sure if GT is ok with it. Maybe shooting them an email doesnāt hurt, I will talk to her, thanks for your input
Two questions - 1) what is the additional info section used for by the students who use it - additional detail on extracurriculars for example, explaining something about GPA or tests, etc. and 2) does GA Tech care and like to see that extra detail or not.
