UGA Admissions, David Graves post - What to Expect When Applying
** LOTS of helpful information in the UGA Admissions Blog (UGA-related and also general admissions advise that applies to any college) so it’s worth scrolling through the posts.
UGA GPA of 4.29, 10 APs/Duals, first gen, in state, but I got a 1320 SAT. How likely am I to get deferred?
My guess is it will depend on your activities and essays. You are probably outside the “auto admit” based on grades and test scores so your file will likely be reviewed in full.
Is that “auto admit” zone the people with really high GPAs and test scores? Also, would you say my stats are in good standing? I am really worried about my test score for EA.
So I would spend some time reading the UGA admissions blog, and the comments. They describe the process. For EA, there is a group of high stat students that are admitted based solely on their stats. The next group, which is not quite as high, get a full file review. The group below that is deferred, as they wait for fall grades. And the final group at the bottom is denied. Be sure your essays and application are strong as my guess is you will fall into that second group.
Got it, thank you!
In case anyone can benefit from this: We are OOS. Our daughter was admitted EA and invited to Honors College. She was also invited to interview for CURO Research Fellows (10 students per year) and won it. The only thing we were offered was $3k/year for CURO which only lasts if she continues research. Other students OOS received difference between in/out-of-state tuition but we didn’t (likely based on our zip code). It is next to impossible to get in out of state and if you do, don’t expect any merit.
Thanks for this. Do you mind sharing your daughter’s stats? My son has a 34 ACT and a 4.0 (weighted) from a very competitive NJ private school. Wondering about his EA shot.
Also, do we know when they released EA last year?
The UGA admissions Blog is very informative. You can scroll back through last year’s posts to find the exact date. Here is the information for this year.
When will our applicants hear a decision?
UGA will not consider his high school weighted GPA. They will used his unweighted high school GPA and calculate it according to their formula, which you can find on the admission blog or through a Google search on how to calculate the UGA GPA. They do not give weight for anything other than AP or IB (no weight for honors or DE) and only include core classes (so no art/PE/band etc).
Once you have that number you can compare his GPA to the UGA admissions blog admitted EA students last year - I think average UGA GPA was around a 4.2. His ACT will be in range for EA admit but GPA will be the question.
IS is usually the Friday before Thanksgiving. OOS was 12/15 last year.
They released last year on Friday, December 15th at 4PMish for OOS. Not sure if it will be consistent this year, but likely close.
Sure. She got a 1490 on the SAT, and her weighted GPA was 4.8 or so (her school didn’t do AP/IB - they did DE senior year) and practically, what matters is unweighted GPA as they will recalculate it. She went to a rigorous STEM magnet school and while she had a lot of nice extra-curriculars: Varsity VB, Lifeguard, Started her own biz at 12, Peer leader, etc, what may’ve stood out was the research she did at a local Biotech that she could articulate and discuss which started summer of Junior year and continued through Senior year. Good luck! Not sure where your son goes, but our district high school is typically ranked very highly and while many applied, I think only one kid actually got off the waitlist in May.
My OOS son applied EA with a 1320 SAT and a 30 ACT. His grades are good but just shy of 4.0 UW. He has 7 AP’s (the max our school offers), started a business 5 years ago, has solid essays, 4 year varsity athlete, leadership roles on campus. We are fully expecting deferral.
In case you didn’t see this… Just added to my stress level…
Ugh. 80/20.
