My dd is applying. In state.
4.0 Gpa unweighted
34 ACT
10 APS/10 honors/4 de
Applying to Herbert School of Agriculture. Lots of Ecs mostly leadership and service nothing spectacular.
Any advantage in applying early - like this month - or is before the EA deadline all treated the same?
I think before the EA deadline is all the same. My daughter is just getting organized because she has a busy fall and has lots of applications and other things to juggle. She won’t submit until closer to the deadline but she is working on her applications and getting things in order.
Mine applied on August 1 and they still have not downloaded it from Common App.
Anyone get an email invite to UTK Scholars Day? Is this just something they send everyone that applies?
My daughter has not yet applied and she did receive that invite. She has visited UTK and sent them her ACT scores so she has been invited to these honors marketing events before. It might be tied to an ACT score or maybe at some point she checked a box for interest in honors. ??
We received it. Assume it was sent to everyone who applied and meets minimum Honors requirements (4.0 weighted Core GPA and 29 ACT or 1330-1350 SAT) which is likely a pretty large group…
Thanks, that’s so interesting. My DD has the GPA but only a 1300 SAT so she just assumed she didn’t qualify for Honors.
I was just guessing based in my D’s stats and the fact that two different Honors/Scholars applications recently popped up in her “Just for you” section of the portal….
UTK is on my son’s reach list. Out-of-State with 3.8/4.0 gpa at a highly rated public high school, good extra curriculars and works 15 hours a week. He scored a 1290 on SAT (not a good test taker). Chances for Haslem BS Admission?
Honestly I think you are right to think of it as a reach but it is definitely reasonable to apply, just be prepared to be deferred. OOS has just gotten so much tougher and the business school is popular. That said, the business school is great and your student definitely should give it a shot. But it might be tough. Sorry I’m not more help just going on local experience and my kid who was there recently.
Do you have any info on how competitive nursing is for OOS? It’s gonna be a long wait to 12/15….
@Viking1108 Your child is my D26’s stat twin (yours just slightly higher).
Applied! When do TN decisions come out? They aren’t rolling like Ark and Bama?
I believe EA decisions come out in early Dec for in state and mid December for OOS. Something like the 7th and the 18th (approximately I’m not positive about the exact dates). But it is in December in two batches.
Pretty sure it’s 12/15 for OOS??
Has anyone gotten any info about whether they actually care about the LOR or not? It’s optional but for many of my daughter’s schools she can’t figure out if anyone is looking at optional letters. Sure she could submit anyways, because what can it hurt? But if she is asked for another one when she applies for honors should she have just saved her best letter for that?
She is in state and will get in guaranteed so she doesn’t need anything extra to up her admissions chances but does it matter as far as honors or any other scholarships?
The LOR game at each school is different. Some they are going to ask for other letters later and some they won’t. Some are optional but do they actually want it or no one will read it?
Did those of you that submitted already submit letters? My daughter requested them from teachers weeks ago but they are yet to come in so she doesn’t have any available to her yet anyway.
I had a fall 2024 applicant and noticed a change in scholarship policy that I’m passing along in case anyone misses it. Students used to be able to continue standardized testing into late spring to qualify for higher merit awards but the new cutoff for institutional merit scholarships test score consideration is thru December 2025 testing per something I noticed on the website site or portal - can’t remember which. The spring testing policy was rather generous so this change isn’t different than what most schools already do, just good to know the details especially for returning families that might have missed this wording somewhere.
