UT Austin Class of 2029 Official Thread

I didn’t see another thread like this started, so I decided it was time to start one! The A&M CO29 is hopping already.

My kid really would like to be a Longhorn and play in the Longhorn Band. He’s an All-Area tuba player and drum major of top 6A marching band. He wants to major in Chemical Engineering…he’ll be the fourth generation of chemE’s and both my husband and I are chemE. The problem is he’s not auto-admit…he’s top 10% with a 3.9UW/4.6W gpa. So I guess it’s a crapshoot whether or not he’ll get it. We are working on the whole fit-to-major narrative but due to all the band and symphony stuff his ECs are limited in the Stem areas. There was just no time for robotics or olympiad type stuff. He excelled in music but doesn’t want to major in music.

Best SAT is a 1490…790 math. I think he’s probably done taking it.

Wish I knew what kind of chance he has for ChemE. People keep saying he has a viable shot but who really knows? Any tips?

Thank you for starting this thread! My daughter would love to be a Longhorn too. She plans to apply to McCombs.

Do they publish the freshman profile somewhere? (SAT scores and GPA). The common data set for the past two years has these fields empty.

Hello! Just wanted to say hi ! My daughter wants to be a Longhorn too! She is going for the school of business.

I’m pretty sure they do because I’ve seen an “average” SAT listed before, but they don’t break it down by college or major at all. But yeah the CDS is not so helpful. I found this but don’t know where the source data is from: UT Austin SAT Scores: Full Breakdown

TBH, I think it will be tough but he should give it a shot. He should look for safety schools he would be happy to attend. My nephew was in a similar situation a few years ago and didn’t get into the business school. He decided not to go the CAP route since he wouldn’t be guaranteed admission in the business school.

He was an outstanding trumpet player and had great stats. He was very disappointed but ended up going to Butler University and loved playing in their band. One time, Butler even played UT in basketball and he got to play at the game.

It’s too bad we don’t see to have any UT Admissions experts lurking around here like the Texas A&M threads do. Does anyone know how they process admissions by major…by that I mean, is there someone who is actually part of a given department that has anything to do with admissions?

Mine will be applying to UT as well although it’s not her top choice. She’s top 2% but it still feels like a “reach” with how crazy competitive UT seems to be!

I attended an online info session for McCombs and want to say that the person said that the department themselves do not make admission decisions.

I don’t remember their names off the top of my head but there are a couple of UT admission consultants/experts that I found on youtube. I can try and find their names if you haven’t already heard of them.

I have certainly found Kevin from Texas Admissions and also College Matchpoint…both very helpful.

I think those are the ones I’m thinking of! Sounds like you have all your bases covered!

Hi, Does anyone know where or how to enter college credits earned by any university on common app? Credits earned through community college are showing in my daughters school transcript but credits earned by another university aren’t in high school transcript. So my daughter really can’t add them on “Courses and Grades” section as they HAVE TO enter what they see on their high school transcript.

Looks like “Courses and Grades” section only take courses from high school/s. My daughter sent an email asking her counselor to see if they can add her University credit on high school transcript(like a dual enrollment since she has the transcript for it) and waiting for his reply. In the mean time I was just wondering if there is any other section she can add these on common app, thanks!

This should be the right section. Go under the Common App tab, and select “Education.” There is a tab that is labelled “Colleges & Universities,” and from there you can put down CC credits:

From there you should just select the course details that apply:

I don’t believe CommonApp allows you to list the direct credits earned, but if it appears on their transcript, having this will give an indication for the AO to look out for CC credits.

Where are you seeing a “Courses and Grades” section on the Common App? I don’t see any place to list the classes you’ve already taken. The Common App main section has “Grades” which is just gpa and rank, and then asks you to list senior year courses. Am I missing something?

By the way, anything you enter into the UT portion of the Common App will be erased on August 1st when the new application opens.

You can enter these courses under Writing->Additional Information. Other than that I do not know of other options.
Only a small subset of schools use the courses and grades section and others use a high school/college transcript directly.

Maybe you do not have a school that uses the courses and grades section in your list. If you ar curious, try adding a school which uses the section like UW-Madison to see if the section appears.

Ah! That’s it…interesting! Since the poster asked the question in this UT forum (and the TAMU forum) I assumed they were working on the UT application.

Yes, we have seen this, she can enter university here, it just doesn’t give an option to enter credits earned and school transcript doesn’t have them either, thanks for the reply, appreciate it!

It was under common app, not specifc to UT. But its interesting to know that they would see certain parts of the common app based on the colleges they select

That tab doesn’t show up at all for UT or TAMU.
