He already has automatic admissions in UC’s… but will he get into Berkeley or UCLA, we dont know… One of his friends with the same scores got rejected in CMU…
BTW, there are around 800 students in his grade…
Very recent interview with Rick Clark where he dropped a few nuggets. The interview is about “What to do if you are deferred” but he talks some about Georgia Tech. For instance they purposefully release OOS EA Mid Jan so they can see how many RD’s they have. That number impacts who they admit and how strict they are. They are expecting this to be the most competitive cycle yet so be prepared, just a lot of hints that this year is going to be really tough for OOS. Interview is about 55 minutes in and he has a Part II and III on the way.
CMU is the top CS program in the country. If he was rejected for computer science, that is not necessarily indicative of his chances elsewhere.
Well in most cases the name is a good indication of the origin of the people, and the statement that highly selective STEM colleges like GA Tech have engineering graduates mainly from students with immigration backgrounds is fact!
I saw Purdue engineering students posted about their engineering school, freshman year > 70% of students have “standard” American names and are mostly in state, but by their junior year, that ratio dropped to less than 40%, half of them transferring out to “easy” majors. And yes even the majority of the graduates from engineering school have “nonstandard” names … Any suggestion colleges used admission policies to make that sort of thing happen is far from reality.
I don’t want to understand why this happens but maybe you can google your kid’s high school news, I bet for most “standard” decent public HSs the first comes out is their football stats. Or you can further look at their NMSF lists and calculate the percentage of standard names.
We are all still waiting for a working definition of standard American names…![]()
There is a book from ~2000 years ago has majority listed ![]()
The book you are referring to is much older than that
No matter the race/identity, only kids with true passion, determination and willingness to hard work can be successful in the STEM fields in the long run as you can’t bluff or just talk your way out. I know this as an Immigrant parent with higher education in US and decade plus work experience in a top institution dealing with the smartest kids of all colors from the US and the rest of the world. The second and third generation immigrants whose parents valued education continue with the same spirit and many follow their footsteps. May the best and brightest kids continue to succeed by hard work and determination and become the next generation of faculty who will spearhead the knowledge transfer. After all, no matter the race, all parents who value education would want their kids to be taught by the brightest too.
Agree, although two points:
- There are many, many fields other than STEM where you can’t bluff your way out in the long run. In fact most.
- The motivation to pursue excellent education has to do with upbringing, values, culture, and ambition, not with whether you are a second or third-generation immigrant
Except magnets and STEM majors are mostly filled with kids whose parents immigrated to the US. This is also observation of DD. “Mom, by second generation people are more relaxed since their families are established (have property etc.), so they do not need to try so hard and parents do not push their kids so much…”
Please get back on topic!
does anyone know when decisions for EA2 should be coming out?
S25 applied Regular Decision plan on December 9th, OOS and all documents including test scores completed by Dec 11th. His decision timeline says TBD like EA2. Not sure if they wait till Jan6 (test score deadline for EA2) before deciding on EA2 and some RD OOS applicants.
EA2 decisions usually come out in the 3rd week of January, after the 20th.
RD decisions come out in March.
Regular decision applicants are not decided early even if they submit their materials early.
Regular decision for out of state will be late March
