If anyone wants to continue the discussion on private vs public universities, please start another thread. This is getting too far off-topic to this GaTech thread. Thanks for your understanding.
Good morning. Question - S25 is in state and got accepted for CS @ Tech in the early action round. He hasnāt committed yet, as he wants to wait until the end of March to hear from his top choice. Whatās the disadvantage in waiting? If we pay the deposit now, can we still withdraw later if he gets into his top choice school? Thanks in advance for the info.
If you deposit now you lose your deposit, there is no harm in waiting to decide.
If you deposit now so you can submit the housing deposit for priority that is fine. If he chooses to enroll at another school later, he just needs to withdraw from GT. Unfortunately you will lose the deposits.
As a side note, when my D was an applicant it annoyed me she had to commit to GT to get access to the housing application. UGA did not require that. But we bit the bullet and did both, knowing those were write-offs if she attended elsewhere.
@VirginiaBelle please correct me if this has changed. I did a cursory check of the Tech Housing site and it seems to be the same as a few years ago.
Not necessarily, respectively disagreeā¦
There are top level kids who were challenged at magnets around the country who are still feel grind at Gatech. I know several personally. It all depends on kids and majors. Also kids at GaTech are extremely competitive. That is both for instate and OOS.
@Parent-in-Georgia , if I remember correctly (did not check), freshman housing is guaranteed if you commit by May 1st. Any later commitments may not guarantee housing.
DD commited on April 29th many years ago. No problem with freshman housing.
Last year friendās kid got in early June- no problems with housing.
Last 2 years at Tech (junior or senior)- huge problem to get housing on campus. DD was forced to stay off campus for one/last semester with priority housing (even with doctorās note that she has to be on campus)
@momsearcheng @DramaMama2021 Thank you for the info. We donāt mind losing the deposit but wanted to make sure it was ok to withdraw after paying the deposit. Thanks again.
How much is the housing deposit?
The initial deposit to commit is $250. Weāll get the housing email only after we pay this initial deposit. We wonāt know the housing deposit amount until then.
When I checked the housing information earlier today I saw $80 non-refundable.
If you want to go that route, just be careful. I am not sure that would apply to GaTech, but I have heard horror stories when students notified college about withdrawal but did not notify housing directly and were on the hook for the whole year for housing. Make sure that if your student will not attend to notify housing directly and ask for some document that you are released from obligations. There are different fees how much you have to pay if you withdraw at different dates. GaTech allows to break lease only if you have internship, study abroad or withdraw from collegeā¦
Generally this still holds true. 2023 same thing⦠and the risk we had if our son changed mind weād be out the deposit, so be it and he didnāt change his mind. Do note that when touring the campus in June it is no an issue where a very few handful of Freshman may not be guaranteed a dorm spot. It is just a few⦠but its not guaranteed (and that was right from the head of housing giving the presentation in the info session, I forget her name).
did anyone receive the housing email yet? Thanks.
Is that the same thing as the additional financial aid email?
My daughter said it asked questions about hosting when she logged into Oscar (i.e. do you plan to live on campus? Or something like that.)
Does anyone know when OOS decision will come out?
@Jeannoula no, I donāt think so. I was referring to the housing email with intructions to pay the housing deposit. I am not aware of the additional FA email.
@DramaMama2021 thanks for your reply earlier. We paid the deposit ($250) and will pay the housing deposit as well when we get that email. We understand that weāll lose both deposits if S25 gets into his top school of choice at the end of March and decides to commit there. Question - if in case he gets into his top school of choice, whatās the process to withdraw? Is it just an email to the admissions and housing? I canāt find any info on that. Thanks in advance.
Keep in mind my experience is from 2021⦠there was a link in the portal to unenroll/withdraw. There was a separate link or email to withdraw from housing.
As someone else mentioned, Iād be sure to do both. There was a story shared in the past couple years (not GaTech) from a family who was getting charged for housing after having unenrolled matriculation. While I donāt think thatās a regular occurrence, why take the chance? Iād recommend this at any school.
Thank you @DramaMama2021. Appreciate it.
