Great data! But, I contest… at the upper end of the spectrum… top schools… folks are “over applying”… I see it and feel it w/ those around me.
Anecdotal, but my DD’s magnet HS in mid-Atlantic saw massive increases in applications to ‘top schools’ for engineering versus last year. GT from 56 to 73, CMU from 54 to 76, Purdue from 34 to 60, Michigan from 51 to 89, MIT from 28 to 45 etc. When I asked about this her guidance counselor said 20 applications is the new normal at that HS.
Right right… I’m not suggesting on the average or percentages… but I’m suggesting say the top 50 universities… and then maybe those see more and more apps.
It’s hard to reconcile with the 8% OOS/Int’l EA acceptance rate, but GT itself says that roughly 20% of deferred EA applicants are admitted. So deferred students do better in the RD round than true regular decision applicants. GT admitted 5,600 students in EA this year. But last year’s total admitted student count was 8,400.
So another 2,600 or so students will be admitted in the RD round given assumed higher yield. The math in my estimate plays out to 400 IS deferred (25% admit rate), 1,300 OOS/Int’l (16%), 425 IS regular decision (16%), 525 OOS/Int’l regular decision (5%). Balancing all the inputs that seems like a reasonable estimate.
I may be spending a lot too much time on college admissions…
Congrats on the acceptance! DD is jealous LOL.
That’s too much math for me! And I’m not sure really what the breakdown is. The 20% deferral to acceptance is lower than the 32% in state acceptance rate for EA1 but higher than the 8% acceptance rate for out of state EA2. Even though 20% doesn’t sound like terrible odds the deferred pool is much stronger than the overall applicant pool. For the years I was following GT admissions very closely regular decision acceptance rates were lower than early decision rates. Can’t remember which year but one year where I had an applicant regular decision acceptance rate overall was 10%. I’m sure this says something about quality of applicant pool for various decision dates as well, as typically admissions counselors say overall stronger applicants tend to apply early.
It does get a little more complicated with deferred students because they are all qualified if they have been deferred and there’s not a rhyme or reason really why one deferred applicant is taken over another one, which makes it so hard to predict!
DD deferred to accepted! She’s so happy. GT is her first choice.
4.0UW, 1590, 13 APs, NMF, good ECs/leadership, lots of volunteering, great reccs
What are the chances of being waitlisted?
That would require knowing how many people both regular decision and deferred in the applicant pool. But there usually are about 4200 people on the waitlist.
As far as chances of getting off the waitlist, the acceptance rate off the waitlist is 1 to 2% typically.
Thank you. I just referred to the CDS of GT. Chances are slim. I guess my D25 will move on. Good luck everyone! Our children will embark on an amazing college journey one way or another. Keep believing.
Those are crazy wild stats!!! Congrats! S25 accepted (will have to start in Summer, not ideal but big picture when deferred EA2 toggled the Summer option in case it was a tiebreaker, who knows if it was or wasn’t!) and will join his S23 brother at GT most likely… he has one week that we let him think it through.
Congrats to your son! We had deep convo with daughter about summer start and FYSA when she was deferred in EA2. I did a lot of research about FYSA in Lorraine, France. She had a very good in-state option with honors/merit (UMD), so ultimately she decided against checking the boxes.
How far are you from GT? Will you be able to visit a couple weekends over the summer?
For those who have decided to come to Georgia Tech and for those who are still deciding, I recommend you follow GTadmission on Instagram. GT housing is also another good one to follow. They will be posting a lot of Instagram reels from now until decision day. The one on GT admission today is about ignite. They also do a lot of of a day in the life of the Georgia Tech student, and sometimes they do Instagram live where you can ask questions.
For those who are unfamiliar with using Instagram, reels are available to watch when there is a circle around the page icon on the top left. They are temporary and only there for a short time so if you see one click on it.
