My UCB COE freshman was originally admitted off the waitlist, so he didn’t expect to be a top student going in. Before he started last fall, he worried about these rumors, too.
He thinks his classes have had manageable workload, fair grading policies, plenty of help available, and he doesn’t think students are hypercompetitive at all. I don’t think a Regents student should worry.
Although he also liked Berkeley, we are currently leaning toward Georgia Tech because of the opportunities he will get as a result of the Stamp’s Scholarship.
Son got STAMPS Scholarship at Gerogia Tech for CS (Full Ride) and he has Regents and SEED Scholarship at UC Berkeley for BioEngineering. He wants to add EECS as double major at UC Berkeley.
He is interested in the field of CS and Bioengineering (AI + Bio) as his career path. He keeps changing his decision as he thinks he can do Bio Engineering research using SEED scholarship at Berkeley. But also wants to do CS and work on AI at Georgia Tech.
Can you please advise what would be a better option for him based on your experiences? Thank you so much!
I can only talk about UC Berkeley as our family doesn’t have experience with GA Tech.
As he has been admitted to the BioE major at UCB, adding an EECS double major would most likely be possible with appropriate course planning (he would want to work with his advisor on that). However, keep in mind that a double major would not be necessary in order to pursue these interests. A BioE single major would also be able to take EECS and CS classes without restrictions.
I would suggest that he look at the curricula for BioE and EECS to think about what his 8-9 semester course plan might look like. (9 semesters are allowed for a double major within COE)
He can then compare to the curriculum at GA Tech for his major of interest there.
