Georgia Tech vs Olin CoE

I got in for AE at GT and I’d probably end up doing ME at Olin. I like Olin’s smaller class sizes and project-focused curriculum, and it’s also 10-15k cheaper per year. However, GT has a lot of courses and research in aerospace (which is where I hope to work), the weather is nicer, and I’ll get a much more typical college experience there. Olin’s food and dorms are also better, but they’re losing $7 million a year and are doing a lot of cost-cutting, so I’m worried that my experience and its future reputation may be hurt. Any advice?

Will try to write a bit more in a bit, but have you been able to visit both campuses? What were your thoughts?

I know multiple people that have turned down schools that are much more well known (cough, ivies, cough cough) for Olin because of their project-based curriculum. Small classes, hands on work and collaborative students are all big pluses. While there isn’t a specific aero program at Olin, I’m going to send you some clips of S23’s friend from elementary/middle school and what he is doing in ME that pertains to aero.

But, I also understand wanting dedicated classes and having a more typical college experience. Have you visited? I know a couple of kids who chose Olin after visiting. Their accepted student day seems to be very different than other places.

Are you 100% invested in engineering? There are only 3 majors at Olin, so if you change your mind there is nothing to do but transfer.

I visited Olin as part of Candidate’s Week, and I also visited GT on my own. Olin’s campus was nice and their facilities are pretty new, but there are only three buildings and there’s not a lot that’s actually going on. GT was a lot bigger and livelier, but it doesn’t have the same isolated campus feel that Olin has.

I don’t thing you could pick two more different campuses and experiences. It seems as if the choice should be clear. Go with your gut, don’t try to guess what others might think, and you’ll be fine as long as you work hard. Congrats and good luck.

My DD applied to Olin (was not accepted) and attends GT (I have 2 degrees from Tech).
Olin sounded great. But as people mentioned it has very limited engineering majors, very few people know about it and you will need masters.
DD is BME and we are hoping (fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:) that in the niche that interests her she will be able to work without masters only because she attended GT (one of the top in BME). It is the same with Aerospace. GT I believe is 2nd. I get that Olin is awesome, but in Aerospace you hardly can be better than at GT.
The only way I would go to Olin if you want that tiny environment. Do not take me wrong, I loved Olin when we visited.
