wow-

She was really a trailblazer-

Didn’t realize she had been ill for this long.

Wow…I didn’t realize that she was that ill.

Prayers for her family.

I hadn’t realized that she’d been ill, either. She was still in the public eye and looked much younger than 75. It’s striking how much younger she looked, and seemed, than Elizabeth Taylor, who was only 4 years older.

How sad for her family.

She was, indeed, a trailblazer. I remember exactly where I was during her campaign acceptance speech in 1984. I played on a softball team and we had practice that night. Most of us were in our 30’s and 40’s and we had a radio/boom box with us. We stopped practicing when she gave her speech and our male coach could not understand why we absolutely would not practice until we listened to the ovation she got and while he was speaking.

I saw her speak at a rally in college. While we knew they were a longshot to win, my friends and I knew we were catching a glimpse of the future of women in politics.

Too young, especially for this vibrant woman. What a cool lady. I disagreed with her philosophically, but I couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I didn’t respect any woman for trying to break through an important glass ceiling.

of course I meant in post #5, last line, while SHE was speaking. Failure to edit in a timely manner.

This is sad news. I really admired her - voted for her way back then for VP. I wish we had more like her in politics today. She never struck me as overly doctrinaire in her beliefs. And she was always pretty and gracious.

She was one classy lady. I voted for her (though I didn’t like Mondale). I agree, I wish we had more like her in politics today also.

I marvel that Mondale had the courage to deep-six his Presidential prospects so completely as to nominate a female running mate. He had to know that was a non-starter at the juncture in our history. Did Ferarro ever really believe they had a shot at winning the election?

Actually, Mondale thought that his prospects would be improved with her on the ticket. I’ve just realized that, while I considered Elizabeth Taylor my mother’s generation, I considered Ferraro my generation. I am still shocked that the age difference was only 4 years.

I was so invested in that election because of her. The reality of a female nominee from a major party was so exciting. Maybe Mondale was right about firing up half of the electorate?

Does anyone else remember her telling off George Bush for patronizing her in the debate? I was cringing with her when he did it, and I cheered when she called him on it.

She’s disappointed me in recent years, but she was important to women at the time in a way that younger women probably can’t understand.
