Get a minor in computer science instead of a major?

I’ve been looking at the different jobs for a computer science major, and a college linked me to this site.

Pretty original URL, huh?

Well, for computer science it has a little tip at the bottom that says

Is this an agreeable statement? If I plan on more going to the business side of computer science, would a minor in CS and a major in business be a more effective route?

Depends on what the “business side” means. Jobs in computer science/tech/IT are really a spectrum, not a black-or-white distinction. There are some business management jobs in CS that really require or recommend a major in CS - like program management or producer jobs, where the incumbent needs an inherent understanding of programming and CS fundamentals but is really managing the production of a CS deliverable/product. There are some that are like a grey area, like business intelligence/analytics.

I wouldn’t say that a business major, CS minor is necessarily more effective. I think it largely depends on the roles you want to go for. What I will say is that few jobs will shut you out because you majored in CS instead of business, but there are lots of jobs that might rule you out because you majored in business and not CS (unless you independently develop the skills necessary to be a software developer or data scientist or UX developer or whatever).

I will say that I like that page a lot. I clicked on psychology and expected to see some drivel and was instead rewarded with a wealth of careers that someone with a major in psychology might like to pursue, with really good advice on the bottom. So yay for this website!
