Get checking out of state or wait till D is in Columbus?

I’ve read that Fifth Third and US Bank are good options for students on OSU campus. We are thinking about switching to one of those banks here in the Chicago suburbs. It is best for my D to open her checking account that she will use in college here, or wait until she gets to campus in Ohio?

Either is fine but might be nice to get out of the way before move in when everybody else might be doing the same…5/3 has a branch on High street and in the Medical center (not sure how full service it is). You could order checks now so she’d have them to start the quarter with.

We just returned from orientation at OSU where they covered this issue and my DS opened up a student bank account with USBank. There were tables with bank representatives at orientation offering students all sorts of perks if they opened up their account with them. It took about 10 minutes for my DS to open his accounts. When does your DD go to orientation? She could easily open the account up then. My son’s debit card was waiting for him when he returned to California.

My son was deciding between Fifth Third and US bank and decided to go with US bank for a few reasons. First US bank put $25 in his account as part of the promotion. Second they have a full-service branch in the Union and about 4 atms on campus. They also have a branch on high street. Fifth Third has more atms on campus, however US bank (since they are new) told us they were acquiring more atms on campus. Fifth Third was only offering a Chiplote gift card as their perk.

Third, US bank has a branch just a few blocks from our house. My son wanted a bank that was in both places which US bank does. I can go into the branch to deposit a check in my son’s account if need be. Also online banking meant it was okay to put my son’s Cal home address on checks since statements were not being sent to a place in Ohio.

I think the bank needed to see my son’s buck I.D. in order for him to get the freebies. Checks were ordered with our home address on them in order to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps, itsv

I’d go ahead and open an account in Chicago. It shouldn’t make a difference. I opened a 5/3 account in my hometown in northern Ohio and use a branch in Columbus.

its best to do it at orientation. Why not get a free shirt when you’re going to get a checking account anyway? I also got a chipotle gift card!
