So I just moved to this neighborhood, which was different from mine. This one is a wealthier suburban, unlike the inner city part where I used to live. So you guys who live in the suburban, where do you get involved into the community ( I don’t mean hospitals or schools because there volunteers are abundant and you might not get the chance to climb higher/ voice your idea because your position is fixed)

Give me an example of what you might be thinking of?

Plan your own fundraiser. Tutor. Venture into the inner city.

What’s something you’re really interested in? What do you devote a lot of time to? What are you thinking about majoring in?

I don’t know. Have anybody read "How to be a high school superstar by Cal newport? If yes then you’ll know what I mean. But if no, what he says was to join community randomly and pay your dues, then after you accomplish some feat there will be room for you to promote your own idea. And that’s when you can develop your unique project(s)that will have a deep impact on surrounding community

^ Looks like you already have a general plan in mind. Why not follow through? You can “pay your dues” anywhere. Library, hospital, congressional office, school, etc…you can apply your interests anywhere in the community.

If you read Newport’s book thoroughly, you would know that asking others for ideas violates the failed-simulation effect. If we can think of something and you can easily implement it, adcoms won’t be wowed.

I’m not asking your original idea. I’m just looking for some advice on how to choose a community because I’m a recent immigrant and used to the urban life. Only recently have I moved to the suburb, so no experience.

Choose a community that interests you. If you like reading, work at a library, if you’re into religion, join a youth group… Does that make sense/help?
