Getting a C on your midyear report in an irrelevant subject?

So, in my school we have a class called “Senior Seminar” which happens once a week. It’s basically the class where we work on a senior project that happens in May. Although the project is months away, all seniors must have a proposal for their project handed in by the 4th of February. If it’s not handed in by that day, you automatically get a C on your report card for the 2nd quarter marking period.

It looks like I’m not going to be able to hand this proposal in on time, thus meaning that I will have a C on my report for Senior Seminar. Will colleges be critical of this? Does this C ruin my chances even if I have all A’s in the rest of my classes? Any answer would help me-- thanks!

I would definitely get off CC and try and work to get the proposal finished on time. If you’re applying to highly selective colleges, yes, the C is going to hurt, simply because it’s a C in senior year, and that can be a sign of senioritis. Would it hurt a lot? Probably not, but none of us will be able to quantify it. If there are extenuating circumstances that have prevented you from getting the proposal in on time, get your GC to explain them when she sends the MYR. But yes, colleges will be critical of it. Will it ruin your chances by itself? I wouldn’t think so, but then again, I’m not an admissions officer.

Yeah, although, my problem isn’t ME getting it done. For the project we seek out a mentor who we work with during the project. My problem is that I can’t get in contact with my mentor-- I’ve tried calling, emailing, everything. If I don’t have the necessary paperwork signed by him by Monday, they won’t accept the proposal on time. So I guess I’ll just have to deal with the C. :(

Does your mentor have an assistant? Do you know where he lives? Do you know any family members? Can you get your counselor or principal to calll for you? How did you find this mentor anyway? Is that a path to try? Can you ask for a new mentor?

is it possible to let your teacher know that you couldn’t contact your mentor?
